Roll out the republic!

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Roll out the republic!

Postby Rushby Hinds » Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:31 am

If Malcolm Turnbull ends up with the head job of the Liberal Party, that would give it bi-partisan support. (Assuming K Rudd is also pro-republic?)

Bring it on!!!!!!!!

If its the McGhavie (spelling) model all good no problems (parliament nominate emminent Australians and we the public vote on who it is) yep I personally vote yes.

Not in favour of the direct election or the staus quo for nominating our head of state's representative. Both parties are guilty of innappropriate choices (Hayden (lets get him out of the way so we can get new blood into the party) and Arch Bishop Hollingsworth   )

Bring on the republic! viva la republic.
Lets hope we can get it on the agenda asap. Lets see Australia move away from under the ample petticoat of stoneage regime where the head of state is chosen by being lucky enough to be born into an inbred, illbred, medieval minded ,disfunctional family .This family happen to provide the head of state for a colony on the other side of the world where they have dumped all their human flotsam over the last 200 years. Nowadays they have a particular fondness for it because they see they see their very existence-that of a muti million dollar existence at the expense of the taxpayer dwindling away before their eyes.
Australians had the chance to vote for a republic back in 2000 but were stymied because of a qwerky referendum question which sabotaged and split the republican agenda.
The model that I prefer is the Irish model. Nominations presented to the electorate by the government and in the case of 2 or more nominations the people vote on who they prefer.
The US, India,Pakistan,Ireland,South Africa and plenty of others had to bludgeon the british from their country by force. We have the opportunity to do it by the ballot box and until now we have not taken it. As someone who has travelled os plenty of times many people I have spoken to cannot fathom how we still have a foreign head of state.

The Governor-General is the Head of State, the Queen is just a figurehead.

I think we have a lot more pressing matters facing the country.....health, water, climate change etc etc and as pointed out by PAFC1870 our head of state, the GG is definitely Australian. When Kevin has solved some of the important issues then perhaps we can look at a republic again. As far as an eminent Australian as our first President, one became available on Saturday night

The Governor General is of course the Queens' representative here in Australia. This office has not always been held by an Australian. As for some suggestion that the now idle John Howard would be first president of Australia -that would have to be the greatest backflip in the history of the known universe. The guy has been a queen-hugger since he learnt how to p--s.

I agree, but in terms of national priorities the republic is low, I don't think the new PM will be too concerned, he's not a pommie basher like Paul Keating  B&W do you seriously think JH would turn it down if offered? Jeanette would make him take it

How about indigenous health, state federal relations, water....all things slightly more important than how we are perceived by not being a republic IMHO.

Mind you now Rudd is PM expect the states to fall in to line and stop the politicing because JWH is gone...

I would vote for a republic but only if we could vote for the head/presedant or what ever he/she will be called.
For me the monarchy is so 1800's and not needed in our society.

If we end up having a president then I think that it should happen that one of the levels of government becomes redundant. Otherwise we will have a situation of four sets of elected levels of government which is ridiculous.

Yes, I'm for scrapping the states, cutting down the total number of MPs, and vesting all power in a 100 member Senate. However, there would need to be a small separate executive to make the day to day decisions the Senate could later review.

We should have a directly elected Governor whose role is that of a super Ombudsman to protect all our civil rights, and Auditors elected directly by the people, charged with analysing the governments' books and publishing them annually as for any business.

Then we just need an mechanism to make sure there is no political meddling with the Judiciary...

Oh and lets not get conned into paying councils once the state governments are gone! 8)

Don't worry, in a few years here in South Irian our head of state will likely be Indonesian.

Will we still be able to beat all of the second rate nations at International sporting events, or do we miss out on the Commonwealth Games all together?
