Federal Government proposes a price on carbon.

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Isn't it "repairing" at the moment, on track to be fully repaired by mid century?

I didn't say it had. I said it had stopped thinning. It is currently in the process of repair.

Abbott has gone silent over carbon: Swan

DEPUTY Prime Minister Wayne Swan says Tony Abbott has deliberately avoided media conferences over the past week because the carbon tax campaign has "hit a brick wall".

Mr Abbott has not conducted a media conference since September 5 in Bendigo and last did a television interview on Friday.

Mr Swan, who is standing in for Prime Minister Julia Gillard while she is on bereavement leave, told parliament on Wednesday the opposition leader was avoiding scrutiny after having been "towelled up" in two television interviews.

Mr Abbott has also been the subject of a Quarterly Essay in which he is accused of having punched the wall near the head of a female student who beat him in the Sydney University presidency election in 1977.

"For two years we have seen the leader of the opposition out there every day at a factory, out there at a shop ... conducting his horror show," Mr Swan said.

"(But) he slammed the door shut on his press conferences because he doesn't want to answer questions."

Referring to the punching incident, Mr Swan said Mr Abbott wanted to "separate himself from his past".

The acting prime minister accused Mr Abbott of deliberately maintaining "radio silence".

The opposition leader hit back, citing sensitivity to the Canberra funeral for Robert Poate, one of the three Australian soldiers who was shot dead in Afghanistan last month by a rogue Afghan soldier.

"There is a military funeral on today and that is why I thought it would be best not to go out and do a party political doorstop," Mr Abbott told parliament.

"You (Mr Swan) have been informed by the manager of the house and you shouldn't make those sorts of smears in this parliament."

However, a check of the records showed Mr Abbott made media appearances on days when five Australian soldiers' funerals were held, since August 2010.

These included two television interviews.

Was not aware that abbott had to continually say it every day that the carbon tax is a load of garbage?

Why the personal attacks ? I respect you have a belief or opinion .... That's what's fun about politics but personally attacking me over a opinion I have is not on .

I reckon the earth is warming. Two months ago it was 12c up here in the Flinders Ranges and today it is 18c and still going. That's six degrees in eight weeks. Faaaark by Christmas time we will all be dead if this keeps up. But thankfully the carbon tax will intervene and everyone who manufactures something or who drives a car or truck will be forced to stop and the world will be cured. Thank you Julia for saving me and my family and protecting my golf course from ruin.

A further blow to the credibility of those who still believe the earth isn't warming:

Arctic sea ice melts to lowest recorded level

Arctic sea ice, a key indicator of climate change, melted to its lowest level on record this year before beginning its autumnal freeze, US researchers say.

The extent of ice probably hit its low point on September 16, when it covered 3.42 million square kilometres of the Arctic Ocean, the smallest amount since satellite records began 33 years ago, according to the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

Changing weather conditions could further shrink the extent, the centre said. A final analysis is expected next month.

The record was broken on August 26, when the ice shrank below the record set in 2007. After that, it kept melting for three more weeks, bringing the ice extent - defined by NSIDC as the area covered by at least 15 per cent ice - to nearly half of the 1979-2000 average.

"We are now in uncharted territory," the centre's director, Mark Serreze, said in a statement.

"While we've long known that as the planet warms up, changes would be seen first and be most pronounced in the Arctic, few of us were prepared for how rapidly the changes would actually occur."

The summer ice is not just dwindling. It has also become thin, relatively fragile, seasonal ice instead of the hardier multi-year ice that can better withstand bright sunlight.

Okay, assuming there is some element of truth to this report, where is the proof that Gillards green party will arrest it with their dodgy carbon tax? None! It is all A grade B S

Keeping setting up those strawmen, SP.

And if you genuinely think the ALP are a 'green party' the oxygen deprivation up there is much worse than I previously thought.
