I agree with Psyber on that interview

"How am I turning into a media circus?"

I've said before that I'm not a fan of Tony Abbott but I wouldn't have answered the interviewer either.
It wasn't a sensitive remark for Abbott to make when he did, even though it was basically true.
It was too simplistic a response and not supportive enough to the needs of the mourners - he should have thought before putting his mouth into gear.

However, it was even less sensitive to rehash it in the media so they keep having to hear it.
And the interviewer must know that it was being done as a media attention grabber (or for other political purposes) not just to point out Abbott's error to him.
So, he didn't really need an answer, and answering would have been playing into his hands by prolonging the rehash.

Hard to feel sorry for him with the free ride he gets from the Murdoch Press :-({|=

Speaking of the MSM, it will be interesting to see the spin they put onto today's events.

Abbott would surely have to be wondering about the strength of his tenure as LOTO. Caught napping again and the powerbrokers wouldn't be to pleased about it.

I doubt you would feel any sympathy for him under any circumstances, nor that you would see anything he ever did in a positive light even if the rest of the world did...

I wish a journalist would ask Jenkins outright if he intends to move into a swanky diplomatic post after the next election. There must have been a sizeable sweetener for him to give up his life ambition of being speaker to return to the back bench so he can participate in caucus decisions. Julia and Shorten's fingerprints are all over the knife sticking out of his back but the bandaid probably has foreign posting to LA or London printed on it. Alternatively he could be being set up to replace professional passengers Midnight Oil or Jenny Macklin with a nice little ministry to while away his time in.

Mr Abbott rang Mr Oakeshott yesterday and offered him support for the Speaker's job. Mr Oakeshott declined.

Why would he decline such an offer?

Go back to the 'Group Hug' before the Independents made their decision to back Julia Gillard. Mr Abbott agreed with pairing the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Once the Ind's backed Ms Gillard, Mr Abbott welched on that. If he had stuck to his word, yesterday's events wouldn't have been a problem for him now.

What did Mr Oakeshott say about declining Mr Abbott's offer yesterday? "Sorry, once bitten, twice shy".

I think the Ind's decision not to back Mr Abbott saved the country from a PM with no judgement at all.

No, I think Jimmy has a point.

Mr Abbott has brilliantly turned Labor from a minority position after the election into a position where they have managed to finish the year with a majority of 3.

Tony has effected a cunning stategy of managing to get Mr Oakeshott, from a conservative electorate, supporting Labor, Mr Windsor ditto, Mr Wilkie, a former Liberal member supporting them and Mr Slipper defecting to them.

They've put up about 270 pieces of legislation in a 'dysfunctional' Parliament and only passed, well, mmm, 270 of them.

Tony has managed to turn them from a government a heartbeat away from defeat to, well, arrr, 2 different heartbeats away from defeat.

All this with a compliant media.

Yep, he's made them look second rate, alright :D

Relations of mine in Port Macquarie reckon Oakeshott is dead in the water at the next election. Hopefully that will prove correct.
Windsor - the biggest class traitor going around - may wimp out and retire rather than face his constituents in Armidale and risk being thrashed at the ballot box also. If Wilke survives he too may face difficulty at the 2013 election although not too many Tasmanian's really have a clue what is going on in Canberra so he could slip under the radar. Slipper will die off like a clearasil pimple. The country is now in debt to the tune of $107billion. After two more years of this cruddy and really stupid government this could escalate even more. I still say Jenkins was pushed and he will be reinvented as a diplomat or given some silly little shadow ministry (for silly walks perhaps) to manage post 2013.

Mr Abbott recently told an audience in London that our debt was small and in economic terms, Australia had serious bragging rights.

Was he lying or telling the truth?
