Interesting comment by a local:

1) A flying school was promised for Whyalla. Didn't happen.
2) A $100 million, 9 storey motel was going to happen in Whyalla. But it didn't.
3) Sanjeeve Gupta made many promises, and announcements regarding the Whyalla Steelworks. Still waiting.....Oh, and did I mention he's got no money and/or he owes a lot of money?
4) Population was slated to go to 80000. Still waiting (it's currently 22000).
5) A desalination plant was going to be built in Whyalla. Didn't happen.
6) A rare earths plant was going to be built in Whyalla. Didn't happen.
7) A tioxide plant was going to be built in Whyalla. Didn't happen.
8) A ship recycling facility was going to be established in Whyalla. Didn't happen.

Penned by a local Whyalla resident who has (yawn) heard it all before.
But you know what? At least the sun will get up tomorrow morning. Guaranteed.

Everything positive going forward in whyalla is directly proportional to a profitable steelworks.
Get rid of Gupta and those other promises aren't out of reach.
He's cooked financially and possibly legally as well.
This would be a Lazarus type miracle if he keeps his hold on the steelworks.

Why say that in a press conference

Sounds like someone who became a Liberal member the day before being announced as the candidate. #-o

She was obviously “all in”.

Jeez, the Libs are faaarked. Tarzia is so stupid, he’s only just realised that the reason he’s the leader is that no-one else was stupid enough to put their hand up.

Would be hilarious if he loses his seat at the next election … and silver spoon boy Jack Batty can go get f’ed with him. :D

This state is so rooted … Labor can and will continue to do what they want whilst there’s no serious opposition party. #-o

Wasn't Wilson also a chance to be both Greens and Labor candidate at one stage??

Deputy Liberal Leader John Gardner will quit state parliament at the 2026 state election and step down from his leadership role in coming days.

Mr Gardner, who was elected the member for Morialta in 2010, said his heart “isn’t in the political contest anymore”.

He said a health scare this year led him to assess his priorities.

“In August, I had a large mole removed from my arm, which tested positive to melanoma,” he said.

“As happens in these cases, some weeks later further minor surgery was required around the site of the mole, and thankfully subsequent tests have shown no further signs of spread.

“In the months since the initial diagnosis, up until I was recently given the all-clear, I was prompted to think about my priorities in life.”

Mr Gardner, whose daughters are aged 4 and 6, said he was proud of all he has achieved, but decided “it’s time to move on”.

“Whatever comes next, I can’t wait to be a more present and active dad in our kids’ lives,” he said.

Mr Gardner’s move is the latest blow for the SA Liberals after a tumultuous period during which former leader David Speirs resigned.

I guess he forgot to mention that in his Morialta Matters glossy junk mail that lobbed in my letterbox today.

Gardner scrapped in last time , so it won’t be a surprise if Morialta flips to Labor at the next election, perhaps with Hartley

Will the last one out in Liberal HQ turn off the lights.

Josh Teague the new Liberal Party Deputy Leader elected unopposed as nobody else nominated.

In 2022 he got 5 votes in the leadership vote. In 2024 he got 4. Now he's 2IC because nobody else was willing to play.

What a rabble.

Troy Bell pleads for sentencing delay for theft, dishonesty offences

A convicted thieving politician has pleaded to have his sentencing delayed until after an appeal date because if he is sentenced before, his seat in parliament would be vacated – triggering a by-election, a court has heard.

Mount Gambier MP Troy Stephen Bell appeared in the District Court on Thursday in front of Judge Rauf Soulio after lodging an appeal following the guilty verdict handed down by a jury in September.

Bell was found guilty of 20 counts of theft and five counts of dishonest dealings with documents after more than two days of deliberations. He was acquitted of one count of dishonestly dealing with documents.

Nicholas Healy, for Bell, told the court if his client was imprisoned prior to his March 13 appeal date, “parliament’s hand would be forced”.

VanDerVegt
“In Mr Bell’s case, should sentence be passed – and indeed if that sentence results in a sentence of imprisonment – a by-election will automatically be triggered on the basis that he is absent from parliament,” Mr Healy said.

“If Mr Bell is imprisoned, he’s not in a position to serve his constituents.

“If Mr Bell is then successful on his appeal and a by-election has been automatically triggered, and someone else then occupies his seat, he has no recourse to reclaim that seat.”

In September, after a three-month trial and two days of deliberating, a 12-person jury found Bell guilty of stealing more than $400,000 from the not-for-profit Independent Learning Centre (ILC) and using the money on home renovations, flights to Los Angeles and to offset his mortgage.

On Thursday, prosecutor Jemma Litster said she was opposed to Mr Bell’s application and urged Judge Soulio to “proceed to sentence”.

Judge Soulio adjourned the matter to next year, where he will make a decision on whether to proceed with sentencing submissions.

Outside court, Bell said he couldn’t “say anything about” his appeal but told media the “process was playing out”.

“We’ll see where it goes,” he said. “I’m instructed not to say anything. Whilst the appeal’s on foot, unfortunately I can’t make any comments.”
