2013 Federal election - Rudd sets date as 7th September

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

This is the direction Tony Abbott and the Coalition want to take Australia. Here's just a few things that scare the bejesus out of me.

Abolish the Clean Energy Fund
Abandon Australia’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council
Abolish the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
Withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol
Repeal the National Curriculum
Abolish the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
Eliminate laws that require radio and television broadcasters to be ‘balanced'
End local content requirements for Australian television stations
Eliminate family tax benefits
Introduce voluntary voting
End mandatory disclosures on political donations
Eliminate media ownership restrictions
Break up the ABC and sell off SBS
Repeal the Fair Work Act
Sell off Australia Post, Medibank Private, The AIS and CSIRO
Sell off the Snowy-Hydro Scheme
Reject proposals for compulsory food and alcohol labeling

Don't believe me? Well here it is.

Wasn't Abbott at a dinner hosted by the IPA in Melbourne last week?

Keep in mind the head of the IPA John Roskam was the best man at Bill Shorten's wedding!

Come on Tony Please stand down
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-04-16/o ... tt/4633398
Legal papers have been served on Opposition Leader Tony Abbott by the co-founder of the now-defunct One Nation party.

David Ettridge is suing for $1.5 million, accusing Mr Abbott of acting unlawfully in 1998 by assisting and encouraging litigation against One Nation that led to the party being deregistered.

Mr Ettridge and fellow founder Pauline Hanson were jailed for electoral breaches but the conviction was later overturned.

Mr Ettridge outlined his allegations in an interview with the ABC's PM program.

He should be awarded a medal if he led the action for One Nation to be killed off.

Good on him for helping to get rid of them! There will be no case to answer and David Ettridge will have to crawl back under his rock for another decade.

Would Abbott have been more worried about One Nation's policies and that party's contribution to the political debate....or the potential for Liberal voters to switch allegiances to Pauline Hanson's party?

I wouldn't have thought most One Nation policies would have been that much different to Abbott's way of thinking in quite a few areas (admittedly a little more severe).

I'm in a fairly conservative Liberal Party branch - so much so that I'm its left wing!
I'd never heard any of the membership express anything but distaste for the One Nation position.
I guess the further away you look at the two parties from the smaller the differences look.
Liberal and Labor here may possibly look close to Communist from a US Republican's perspective - both support "radical left" policies that the US rejects. ;)

Publicly supported health care and unemployment benefits are a couple I'd considered a real Republican may object to.
Then there is mandatory employer paid superannuation, and higher minimum pay rates than are standard in the USA.
Support for child care and paid parental leave perhaps?

Mr Shorten said the super savings of 3.6 million Australians earning less than $37,000 will be $500 worse off under an Abbott-led government.

He said women made up 60 per cent, or 2.2 million of those affected.

"Mums working part-time while they care for young kids being hit with a $500 tax bill for contributing to her superannuation (is) not fair or smart," Mr Shorten said, adding that women were already retiring with less money because of pay disparity and time out of the workforce to raise children.

Can Shorten please remind us about how they cut the co-contribution payment and how that fits in with their "look after the under privileged" mantle?
