The fact that they weren't prepared to re-instate him as PM, I think, says quite a bit about him, and his ability as a Leader.

Did Howard sack Costello? No. It's politics.

Also Politics- the people (for some unknown reason) want Rudd to lead, yet his own party don't!

His own party don't want him as PM because Rudd was a joke of a PM (bad-tempered; fake personality; dictatorial; autocratic), and a significant percentage of senior MPs would refuse to work with him if he was made PM again.

each newspoll that is revealed closer to the election just keeps getting worse!

And really how can Gillard talk about leadership and ministry stability when the most experienced all resigned or got sacked and replaced by novices???

The Labor party knows their fate is sealed and have decided to let Gillard take all the blame.

That way they can claim to have a new start in the next parliament ... will be a strange sight having so many government MPs on the opposition benches though

Yes, and I assume Rudd will make his next move sometime before the election after this one, when there is some chance of winning on the horizon.
The question is will Shorten stand as his deputy or stand against him...

Labor should dis-endorse Rudd to finally rid themselves of the leech ...

Also, I'll boldly predict that Abbott will be rolled and may not last the Coalition's first term.

The Coalition will squabble violently with the spoils of victory.

Interesting point, one that Laurie Oakes who normally adopts a pro ALP bias in his writing is advocating at present, Oakes is not the only one that thinks it, plenty of people from the ALP Left and other commentors that generally support their views are calling for him to be sacked from the ALP also.

I think the public are getting to see a ALP Left vs Right battle being played out in front of them with this, if Rudd wins, the ALP left will for a brief time have won control of the ALP, that is why I think its unlikely to happen. As much as his ALP collegues may hate his guts he like Turbull is popular with the Australian public, it would be an even worse result for the ALP if there is such a thing if Rudd was to be thrown out of the ALP as that would effectivley unrust enough people from them to do damage.

The other option is that Rudd could simply resign and become an independant, he would easilly win if he chose that option. Personally I think he will be there on the day after they are decimated to pieces to rebuild it back to the conservative right and to have his revenge on those that opposed him.
