The South Australian Political Landscape

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

The problem with politics is ego.
Both the Liberals and the ALP have had times when leadership challenges are rife.
If a party hasn't held office for a while, as soon as the prospects look better everyone who wants a go starts counting their support and numbers.

In SA, the Libs have been unstable over the last few terms while the ALP have had a dominant leader - love him or hate him.
Federally, the Libs were stable under Howard - love him or hate him - while the ALP kept changing leaders and are still threatening to again even in office.
My guess is that Isobel Redmond will retain the leadership here - but you never really know until the numbers are counted..

So, in the washup from Super Saturday, the result - although a win - was very disappointing for the ALP, especially in Port Adelaide. What one has to consider, though, is that both by-elections were replacing to of the SA ALP's most recognised and hard headed (and hated) men over the past decade. Whether or not the electorates of Port Adelaide and Ramsay are convinced by Premier Weatherill's new regime or not, surely some of the voter backlash was against the two men who they were voting to replace. Ironic, of course, because those two men are not the ones being punished.

It wouldn't surprise me if, with a more community based focus from backbenchers (for the moment) over the next two years, the ALP can steady the ship in these electorates, albeit slightly.

reminded me somewaht of a super safe Lib seat in Queensland that was lost with a 12% swing to labour in the early Latham days and then the libs won it back 15 months later with an even bigger swing. Think the voters of Port Adelaide wanted to give labour a whack, get it out of their system and it will return to being a safe labour seat at the next general election.

Labor won in a canter in Ramsay ... this is still an extremely safe seat so no worries there.

The only reason the result in Port Adelaide was 'closer' was due to the anomalies in the preferential electoral system we employ here. When the 2nd candidate on 1st preferences (by a long way) can even get close on 2 party preferred then that is generally a one-off event. Labor will win this seat quite comfortably at the next election.

Either way, it's probably a relief to all involved now that the Rann/Foley sideshow is officially out of the way. Now both parties can concentrate on the main game without the distractions of the past 12 months. Goes without saying that this next phase will be crucial. The Libs will either make their run, or Jay & Co will be sitting pretty and start to fancy their chances just a little bit more at the next election.

Cracks are appearing in the Weatherill administration now, IMHO. Plenty of challenges looming in the next few months too.

Atkinson is proving to be a rogue from the backbenches - publicly ripping into first Portolesi and now Rau. Problem is, he is hooked into Rankine at present ;)

Chloe Fox and Russell Wortley are struggling. Koutsantonis seems listless in his new portfolios. Snelling going OK but has no cards and his poker face is not hiding the fact he cant even afford to bluff atm.

Watch this space, I reckon.

LIBERAL MP Michael Pengilly has been booted out of State Parliament after saying a female minister should be "put down".

Mr Pengilly, the member for Finniss, has previously been in trouble for calling Prime Minister Julia Gillard a "real dog" on Twitter.

Today, he was ejected at the end of a raucous question time by Speaker Lyn Breuer under new sin bin rules.

He allegedly yelled the statement "you should be put down" across the chamber to Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox.

POLICE have been called to the Victor Harbor electoral office of embattled state MP Michael Pengilly.

Two patrol cars went to the Victoria St electoral office around noon today.

A police spokesman said Mr Pengilly, the MP for Finniss, called police to complain about members of the media outside his office.

The spokesman said they left without incident.

A tweet from Channel 10 reporter Adam Todd states Mr Pengilly then left his electoral office with federal Liberal MP Jamie Briggs.

Mr Pengilly was yesterday ejected from Question Time after telling Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox she "ought to be put down, fair dinkum" for failing to ensure buses ran on time.

Yet paradoxically he and his federal counterparts were/are hellbent on creating nouveaux pauvres with unecessary new taxes and squandering of the surplus left to them, yet they'll continue to inhabit the coffee shops and trendy bars when the people they are meant to represent scrounge for enough dollars to pay their electricity bills

I love this line: "Treasurer Jack Snelling said he did not agree with the recession claim because "you don't have a recession when the unemployment rate is at 5.2 per cent"."

Bit of a concern if he actually thinks that
