INDUSTRIAL Relations Minister Russell Wortley has denied allegations that he engaged in corrupt behaviour in the 1980s when he was a gas works union member.

Opposition Upper House leader David Ridgway has used parliamentary privilege to table statutory declarations from former SA Gas Company employees alleging redundancies were given in exchange for payments to the Federated Gas Employees Industrial Union.

They allege that Mr Wortley was at the time involved in activity for the gas union, and he suggested payments be made to the union to facilitate redundancy payouts.

Mr Ridgway said the statutory declarations were "credible allegations" of serious misconduct.

Allan Cotton, one employee who wrote a statutory declaration in September, says that he felt coerced into making a payment to the union in order to get his redundancy payment.

You're interested in my thoughts  :)

Well, I'm not that interested in State politics, but without knowing the details, I'd be against the sale.

The problem is that whenever a government tries to cut any expenditure or benefits, everyone screams, which leads to decisions like this, unfortunately.

I don't know how accurate the statistics are, but I was at dinner last night with a bunch of local lawyers most of whom act for SA business interests in commercial dealings, and so keep a close eye on the state economy.

The trend of the conversation suggested that up to 70% of those actually employed in this state now work for the public service and that means the other 30% have to fund the difference between these public service salaries and the taxes these public servants pay. The other issue was the idea that about 50% of the potential work force in SA is living on benefits in one form or another.

There was also a lot of gloom about the $2 million a day in debt repayments, plus the amount to be paid for the new RAH and how this is to be funded, and whether business has a future in SA - apart from mining that is.

Does anyone have access to reliable figures?

The RAH and Adelaide Oval will be funded partially by the sale of the Forrest/Timber rights of the South East, which is a ******* disgrace.
