Oakshott's rambling speech yesterday just capped off a bizarre couple of weeks.
Basically we had Katter, Windsor and Oakshott enjoying their time in the sun, while the major parties threw the inducements at them. All three of them were not up to the responsibilities they found themselves with.

And if Tony Windsor thinks the Broadband network was the clincher well that's great Tony but how is the government going to control what goes on in such a fast moving industry?

Presumably they would have been up to their responsibilities if they'd backed Abbott?

'mad Katter' didn't :?

all i'm saying is that they were elevated to a platform above and beyond what their abilities and electoral support would normally entitle them to. i know that's the way the cards fell and good luck to them but it was a distortion.

Dear Editors and Staff (in particular Andrew Bolt) of the News Limited and associated papers,

My sincerest condolences on losing the 2010 Federal Election. No one can accuse you of not giving it your absolute best shot, but at the end of the day it wasn't enough.
May the upcoming State Elections in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria bring a better result for you.

Yours etc....

Past State results would indicate your wrong. Beattie, Rann, Bracks and Carr all held sway over minority governments at various points but then increased their vote the next election.

Exactly and with the economy set to kick back into gear the Libs now won't be able to use the "see look what we did" schtick. I'm kinda surprised Labor didn't run a few of the Libs "The union thugs will shut down small business" ads from the last election to drive it home to the public how much absolute **** they talk.

Not sure whether the economy will kick back into gear just as much as we hope. The current talk is of the US entering a double-dip recession. As we all know, when the US economy sneezes all the other economies in the world catch a cold. I think that overseas conditions over the next three years will determine whether the Labor Party can expect a majority next election or if the coalition are favoured.

"Insults start to fly from furious Coalition":

Liberal Senator George Brandis told ABC Radio the Labor government had "as much legitimacy as the Pakistani cricket team".

"What went wrong yesterday is that common sense didn't prevail ... it defied commonsense," Mr Pyne told the ABC.

I heard Hockey also talking up the 'illegitimate' argument.

The born-to-rulers don't quite understand the concept of democracy.

"Let the Great Unhinging begin":

A large proportion of the Coalition vote base believes there is one and only one acceptable outcome in politics – theirs. And it is this zealotry that will explode.

The temptation for the Opposition to continue to exploit this belligerence, as they so successfully did in the lead up to the campaign and in the campaign itself, will be overwhelming. When all that stands between the Opposition and a new election – a new chance at *power* - is one scandal, one stuff up, one member of parliament changing – the attraction of flicking the switch to rhetorical overdrive for effect, and righteous indignation to incite their masses, will simply be too great. No distortion will be too large, no lie too audacious, no accusation too brazen.

And they will be ably assisted and their supporters commercially exploited, by the leadership and opinion section of The Australian – not to mention the curmudgeonly Lesser Scribes infesting the sewer end of the News Ltd tabloids and that growing group of feeble minded cowards at the ABC whom appear to have lost any capacity for intellectual autonomy when it comes to independently assessing the dynamics of Australian politics.

Indeed I suspect characters like Brandis wouldn't be comparing themselves in government to the Pakistani cricket team if the Indies had have backed them.

I should send Brandis an email "To quote Shaquille O'Neal "How's my ass taste?" ;)

And in breaking news, the ALP have now overtaken the LNP in the 2PP vote.

I vaguely recall I've commented on this possibility once or twice.

Now what is it the Libs have been saying - we won more seats and the 2PP vote?

Well, the facts are - they didnt and they didn't.

Liars and deliberate liars.

I doubt the 2PP vote change will be headlines as it was when it was the other way.

At least that gives some validity to the current state of the nation 8) However it is cold comfort to ALP strategists who planned their election strategy. They didn't win, but fell over the line with the support of a couple of megalomaniac bushies. :(

Why are they only megalomaniacs after they choose the ALP?

If you took a vote, it would be odds-on that the independent who sided with the Libs is the megalomaniac :)

It's easy to call any conservative "born to rule". In my experience, the left side of politics is no less able at exhibiting similar behaviour even if it goes by another name. Power trip.

It is a bit lame to say the least to label the independents with all sorts of labels when the decision went against them. As much as the outcome doesn't really please them, I think they can hold their heads pretty high on the whole for the dilligence with which they approached the process and the reasons offered for their choices. Whoever was handed minority Govt will struggle to get much done in the next 3 years anyway, so if anything we can probably expect a pretty moderate and mainstream govt that goes through the motions by and large.

The murdoch media have been atrociously biased before, during and after the campaign. Even the once left leaning ABC has been really unbalanced this election... The ABC's ultra right wing, Howard appointed board maybe part of the issue there.

I've just watched Christopher Pyne on Lateline.

Born to Rule with a vengeance; the Government is somehow ''illegitimate'', the independents are a disgrace, etc, etc, we got more seats, more votes, more preferences, etc, etc, it's not fair,

No wonder 2 independents decided they preferred Labor's approach.

Poor loser, no class.

:ymapplause: No doubt about it, arrogance occurs on both sides.
Not all as some would say (I doubt Ken Wyatt thinks he was "born to rule"), but a minority that will often rise to prominance.
