As much as I don't particularly like Abbott, I think I would prefer him to win the election, if his opponent is Rudd.

Even so, I'm expecting to hear this line quite a bit from Abbott over the coming months "the issue was not Julia Gillard - the issue is/was this Labor Government".

Abbott has just called for a no confident motion against the PM ... we'll see whether the independents have any balls.

If they support the motion we go to an election.

So what will determine WHEN the election is to occur if the motion passes?

I was only 3 in 1975, so can't remember what happened in that instance.

If the House doesn't have confidence then the convention is that PM goes to the Governor General and states that they cannot form a government, in which the GG decides that Parliament should be dissolved and an election called.

Constitutionally, this is murky ground and is dependent on the goodwill of the PM.

Of course, the GG can step in at any stage which is what happened to Whitlam in 1975.

Gillard just survives a call for a no confidence motion in question time.

It's clearly all over for her ... she should do the honourable thing and not stand.

an early election could be held if the PM (whoever that is) goes to the GG ... unlikely

or another no confidence motion is successful ... maybe

or the GG says stuff it I'll dissolve parliament ... no chance

I think we might all be getting sucked in here, won't be surprised if Gillard is re-elected today.

Gillard winning would be the worse thing that could happen to Labor ... her position would be untenable

Not if it's decisive, which I would expect.
