Marshall’s desperate all-things-to-everyone rhetoric smacks of the smug self-belief of someone who has been unanimously appointed leader of a party he joined only six years ago, and who consequently believes he can spout any old nonsense and it will be universally applauded.

He has suggested the “small-target” Liberal strategy is over, and I’m sure he believes it is, but so far we have seen little substance and even less showmanship. He has appeared nervous and unconvincing in many of his Question Time forays, usually reading clumsily from notes and giving the distinct impression it is the first time he has cast his eyes across them.

Not that this is any great setback; the Liberals knew they were anointing a cleanskin with less than a term of parliamentary experience. Despite his much-publicised yachtsmanship, it was never going to be smooth sailing.

It was always too much to expect he’d swan in as leader and turn state politics on its head. His adherence to the tired narrative with which the Opposition has thus far persisted demonstrates the party behemoth takes more than one man to deviate from its weary trajectory.

The vindication of the party-room’s decision to endorse a new generation leader will only come if the Opposition cultivates a new willingness to engage in the battle of ideas and to enter into a more transparent policy dialogue with the electorate.

The current Liberal phrasebook still consists of glib lines that criticise without offering solutions. Whoever the strategic genius was that came up with the notion to hammer the economy in Question Time needs to go back to the drawing board; with only a year till polling day, the Opposition has no right to criticise Labor’s economic record unless it’s prepared to explain what it would do differently, and better.

Both sides are regularly guilty of this. Especially Tom Koutsantonis.

I'm sure I heard Stephen Marshall say in the press conference to announce his Shadow Ministry "Every potfolio will represented in the cabinet, but some potfolios will be delegated down to deputy shadow minsters who are not in the cabinet". Doesn't this mean that these portfolios are in effect not represented in cabinet? Ah what the heck, I like the guy. :)
