If she genuinely is mentally unstable Psyber, - which may well prove to be the case, then its fair to say that she must step down from the position immediately. No one expects anyone with severe mental health issues to the point of causing theft and assault to happen on another person to be able to have the capacity to continue do the required work of a legislative councillor.

With Bipolar Disorder, especially when medication is being changed, there can be transient "highs" lasting anything from days to only hours.
In this state judgement and impulse control are impaired, but once stabilisation is achieved that person is then as fit and competent as as anyone else.

The latest on "Com-Car-Gate":

No sooner had he (Senator Edwards) finished his maiden speech than he was requesting the use of three Commonwealth cars, and their drivers, to ferry his guests from Parliament House to a swish Canberra restaurant.

Under the rules, he is only entitled to the use of one car.

And if this wasn't bad enough, when questioned by a journalist about the incident, he tried to deny it.

"I'm telling you I hired a bus, and everyone got on a bus," he is reported to have initially said. However, he later admitted he had used three Comcars for his immediate family, including his children and parents.

It is understood the Comcars were used to deliver family members to the upmarket restaurant Ottoman, less than 2km from Parliament House.

It's embarrassing, not only for Senator Edwards, his family, but for all South Australians.

Here's a tip for young players in Canberra: Don't try to deny an incident that is witnessed by others, and which is the subject of an external audit.

NEW South Australian Liberal senator Sean Edwards filed an incomplete declaration of interests to the parliament, while his staff tried to get taxpayers to foot the bill for the hire of a bus to transport his entourage around Canberra.

This is on top of the misuse of government cars and the staffing of his parliamentary offices that sparked two separate investigations by the Finance Department.

Senator Edwards' statement of registered interests -- received by the parliament on August 1 -- lists shareholdings in 16 public and private companies, eight directorships and a partnership.

The companies are involved in wine making, farming and property development.

However, a search of Australian Securities & Investments Commission records revealed he was listed as a director or shareholder in six other companies.

Senator Edwards has been gagged by the Liberal Party from speaking to the media, with the party forced to parachute in spin doctor Jim Bonner to take control of the situation.

This is just getting ridiculous.

Fruit-and-veg-gate tonight

POLICE have defended the actions of a security officer who tried to detain and question Liberal senator Mary Jo Fisher after she allegedly shoplifted fruit and vegetables.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court today Brendon Beh, prosecuting, said police would continue to pursue the charges against Fisher.

He also said store security officer Cathryn Groot was within the authority of her restricted licence when she stopped Fisher and held her for questioning by police.

Fisher has pleaded not guilty one charge of theft and one of assault over an alleged incident at Frewville Foodland in December last year.

Michael Abbott, QC, for Fisher, said last week Ms Groot was acting beyond her duty and therefore her evidence was inadmissible as her actions were illegal.

Fruit-and-veg-gate back in court...

Prosecutors have taken instructions from the Crown Solicitor and intend proceeding with charges against a Liberal Senator.

But the lawyer for Mary Jo Fisher has told Adelaide Magistrates Court he still plans to push for the shoplifting and assault case to be thrown out.

The Senator allegedly took $92 of fruit and vegetables from a supermarket at Frewville in Adelaide's eastern suburbs last December.

She denied the charges but security officer Cathryn Groot told the court she witnessed the theft.

Ms Groot said the South Australian Senator pushed her twice and repeatedly closed the car door on her arm.

Defence lawyer Michael Abbott QC argued Ms Groot's evidence should be ruled inadmissible because she had acted beyond her authority.

At the latest hearing, prosecutors said they planned to proceed with the charges and Ms Groot had done nothing unlawful.

Mr Abbott said he would hear the entire prosecution case before pushing for it to be thrown out.

THE manager of Frewville Foodland called police to report potential shoplifter and Liberal senator Mary Jo Fisher after a security officer raised the alarm, a court has heard. Fisher, 48, has pleaded not guilty to one count each of theft and assault over an alleged incident at the supermarket in mid-December last year.

Giving evidence in the trial today, Foodland duty manager Kieren McIntyre said he was called to the front of the store on the evening of December 15 by security. "(Security officer Cathryn Groot) said she was watching a potential shoplifter," he said. He recalled Fisher was leaving through the checkout at the time, having allegedly paid for $7.50 worth of items in her hands but not for fruit and vegetables in her personal canvas shopping trolley.

Mr McIntyre said he watched Ms Groot follow Fisher out to the store's car park and then led the pair to an upstairs office inside the store, where she was questioned. "I called police and informed them of what happened." After asking a staff member to stand at the front door of the store, Mr McIntyre returned to his work - but not for long.

"I was called down to the front and Fisher was leaving the building with the security officer following her. I followed them out of the building to Fisher's car," he said. "Fisher got into her car and then I called the police again, just to notify them, to say what had happened and gave them the car registration details in case she drove off." He said Fisher appeared anxious but relaxed when he told her he had called police again.

Prosecutors have alleged Fisher assaulted Ms Groot in the carpark as she tried to leave the premises by pushing her out of the way of her car and then slamming her driver's side car door into Ms Groot's arm.

Michael Abbott, QC, for Fisher, said the evidence against his client from Ms Groot was inadmissible because it was obtained unlawfully. He argued that Ms Groot was not authorised, by way of her restricted security agent's licence, to detect and investigate potential property theft.

This morning a representative from the Office of Consumer and Business Services gave evidence that Ms Groot was entitled to carry out those functions under her authority to perform "guard work".

Krystle Bobridge, acting senior supervisor for licensing for the department, said security agents were permitted to guard people and property as well as prevent, detect and investigate potential offences with regards to people and property.

The trial, before Magistrate Kym Boxall, continues.
