The reason that Family First target and accept Liberal Party candidates is for no different reason than why the Labor party did the same thing to Democrat Candidates. They bring votes with them to the party and the result is assistance in winning the said seat.
I heard Bob Day on the news stating that he was unhappy with the candidate pre-selection process in the Mayo electorate and felt that it was skewed to take the candidate that got the job so he has decided to stand against them with Family First. Personally I hope that he, the Greens candidate or another independant wins it seeing as Labor are not standing a candidate and I dont think it should just be handed to the Liberal Party on a platter as appears to be going to be the case.
I am not sure how preferencing the Family First party last helps the Liberal Party or Labor for that matter, it is my opinion that doing so in Victoria simply altered the selection to the DLP which is simply the Catholic Version of Family First who have a mirror version of their policies. Eventually some minor party is going to scoop the pool, so its better to identify the party that is most likely to get the largest portion of votes and simply cut a deal with them to reverse preferences in order to potentially gain an additional seat rather than just handing it to the opposition.
