Victoria Park Redevelopment

Morning guys, I was reading an article in the advertiser today (1/9/07) and it got me thinking about the vic park redevelopment. The article was writting by Greg Kelton on page 7. I guess its more about the adelaide city council than vic park but still was an interesting view on the issue. I would be interested to hear people opionions about the vic park debate.

Personally I think a big waste of money, its getting built for the corporate people not the everyday Joes out there.

I think the space should be better used than it is now. Adelaide is so short of good venues while we hold on to vast amounts of land near the city to walk the dog.

Adelaide's air is so polluted it needs all the green space it can get. Even in the 1980s the sky over the city looked brown driving down from the hills.

Then why do Melbourne's skies look grey instead! What is happening to the windshields on both cars.

Spot on TGFC. I'm the biggest rev head out there but realise that the way things work at present is quite suitable for a four day event once every year. Building an Ivory Tower for pollies, and the corporates at tax payers expense on public parkland is not the right way to go.

As for the structures use for Horse racing, I'm also a fan of the horses but crowd figures show clearly that this sport is not going to experience a revival in attendance. TAB made sure of that.

Interestingly, the current corporate facility utilised by the government is stocked with various volunteer groups for the 4 days.

My father-in-law spends a day there every year as a thank you for the volunteer work he does with mentally disabled folk at Strathmont.

Apparently last year, Mike popped in to say g'day and they just sent him off for more beer as the fridges were running out. He restocked the fridges as requested, chatted for a while and disappeared.

That's great to hear that a portion of the governments suite is allocated to worthy volunteers. I know for a fact that the other 90% is made up of government 'hanger-onerers' and financial supporters.

Your father in law is spot on SMAC. I was up there (with Bridgestone) in 2006 and the facilities were fine. I'm certainly not anti-development, I'd just like money to be spent on structures that will be used often.

You also need to look at one important reason the Adelaide 500 is so successful - THE TRACK!! Its a great track for racing on, good for overtaking, and the chicaine is unforgiving. As a part of the new development the track is going to be changed significantly, and the 3 main overtaking spots will be gone. The quality of the actual racing will suffer significantly. Once that happens, the event will stop winning awards, people will start losing interest. What good is a big new grandstand if the race has been shipped off to Mallala or Adelaide International Raceway?
