Looks like the $7 co-payment is going to be defeated this week.

Im not a fan of Abbott or his Govt, but the $7 co-payment is a no-brainer really.

I have seen the clip now
When put in context, it makes sense
The ASC cant tell him how much over budget they are
Somewhere between $350m to over $600m
No wonder Wong doesnt mind - that's a drop in the ocean of what she wasted in her time

Jimmy you are a bigger clown than I thought.

Means little coming from you. Even Penny Wong is now admitting the ASC has, and is having, "it's challenges"

The point is not that they are over cost and time, but that the ASC cannot tell them by how much now or at the end

The recent trend has been from labor to liberal, it wasn't that long ago that all state governments were labor (I think)

Seems they pendulum is swinging again.

There is a real problem in politics.

One major party appears, from what it says, to be more compassionate in social terms, but has a consistent history of running up excessive debt when in power, at state or federal level, in the interest of retaining power with promised goodies for the swinging voters, while also demonstrating a strong trace of self interest among its parliamentary members. The other major party is financially more responsible, but seems to lack the compassion and common sense to make sure the necessaries economies to reduce the debt don't bite those who can afford it least, and the same strong trace of self interest.

The voters on the whole seem to side with one or other of these groups most of the time with only a small group of swinging voters determining outcomes. So we have a pattern of nasty oscillations set up.

If I were PM now I'd set the example by taking a 40% cut in salary and asking all other MPs to do the same, to demonstrate good faith, while we work out a strategy to reduce the deficit with minimum harm to the most vulnerable. But, such is my scepticism of all party's declared good intentions that I expect nearly all MPs in all party groups (and the independents) would unite against me and I wouldn't last long.

So who is for forming a Self-sacrifice Party? ;)

It is, for sure.

Victorias message to Tony and Joe is clear and concise. This Federal government joke will do nothing in it's tenure. Abbotts hands are bound by independants in the senate, he can't pass a budget and the people of the land have had enough of his monotone delivery of some of the most manufactured political flap trap we have ever been exposed too. His days are numbered already.

If the opposition can just find someone, ANYONE, to replace Shorten then they will be on course to return to government.

But, who?

Good post.

Swinging voters would be more prolific now than ever before. I'm 40 ( nearly ) and I'd say my generation would be about the last to "vote Labor because my Dad did".

You're right with your assessment. Labor spend to keep the masses happy while not knowing how to keep the budget afloat while the LIbs hit the people who can least afford to lose money while looking after their affluent support network.

Every time the two sides seem to be coming closer together, they move further apart.

Thanks Booney - it was from the heart - financial probity tends to draw me to the Libs, but I'm not happy with their lack of social perspective.
I've voted ALP in the past, and for independent "Better Education" and other specialist candidates. I keep campaigning within the Libs now for a more balanced position, and get some support from individual members, but not much among the officials.

When I first joined the Libs in the early 1990s it was because I thought both they and the ALP were moving too right wing, apart from different lip service, but that I may be able to speak out more inside the Libs. (At least I get some satisfaction making the case for accepting gay marriage to people like Corey Bernardi.)

politics in australia has shifted a long way to the right in recent times too - both lab and lib. that is why the greens have been doing so well. a lot of people are fed up with labor's stance on social issues (asylum seekers etc)

i am one of those people but just couldn't bring myself to vote for them as i think they are economically irresponsible, maybe not irresponsible but a lack of pragmatism is probably a better word. having said that i am of the opinion that looking after people should be number one, even at the expense of the economy, which is why i have voted labor i guess. the problem is, i really wasnt happy with labor either, but i didnt see a viable alternative.

to me there seems to be a need for a centrist party again (old democrats?) that take economic cues from the libs but are socially left leaning. thats who i would vote for (though i think it is a fairytale)
