Bikies run riot over SA Govt

Postby Squawk » Wed Jun 06, 2007 12:45 am

I have been constantly amazed at the rings bikies are running around the govt. For years Rann et all have preached 'tough' yet they cant demonstrate tough!

After the latest shootout, Minister for Police Holloway said he would allow the Police Commissioner to have whatever legislation he needed. He also deflected attention to the Courts saying their penalties were too soft. What a disgrace. This government has had over 5 years to review Criminal Law and nigh on every amendment made has been AFTER something has happened. Cases in point:

Nemer
Kapunda Rd Royal Commission
Bikie fortresses (you still haven't got on a bulldozer yet, Media Mike)
Security Guard licensing

Now Media Mike wants to use new terrorism laws. I haven't read the legislation recently but I think it would require significant legislative amendments or a whole new Act. They wont do a new Act because it will be too much of a political risk when (not if) it fails.

This govt has seen fit to rush to pass new legislation altogether on Industrial Relations and OH&S, yet despite a tough law and order mantra has not seen fit to review the criminal legislation it has in place. It even thinks that alleged bikies should be shunned by lawyers when we live in a democracy that affords innocent until proven guilty status to all of us - including pollies and ex-pollies brought before the Courts. Imagine if lawyers refused to defend them? Maybe they should!

Bikies versus Govt - it's like the Harlem Globetrotters playing an u/12 ice hockey team at the moment.

The libs are finally doing something in SA! Been 2 elections since the last time they actually put a dent in Rann at all. And they're really making him pay at the moment.

Don't much like Rann. Too smug for my liking. Always seems intent on doing what will get him votes, not what is the best thing to do. IMHO this is very dangerous. We elect a government so they can know more than us and make the right decisions, not to follow the public who might know very little about the situation.

I am slightly acquainted with some of the Angels in SA. I must admit I find them more straight forward and reliable to deal with than the few pollies I know personally, and certainly more so than most lawyers.

any serious action against any out-law gangs may be counter-poductive- if you make being a gang member illegal, you drive them underground.
At least at the moment, they identify themselves, & their HQ's are known- they can be easily monitored.
This may be better than any alternatives being offered at the moment.

The government had a perfect opportunity to use Rann's "anti-fortification" laws a few months back when they won what you could term a 'test case' over the property in the Adelaide Hills which had a court order allow the government and police the power to tear down the fortification around the house in question.

Media Mike showed his distinct lack of balls by not jumping on that decision and running with it to drop the walls around the other HQ's he has promised to tear down.
