Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Looks like the govt has done a deal with PUP on the repeal of the mining tax.

Will be interesting to see when the small business instant asset write-off and vehicle accelerated depreciation changes come into effect, considering the govt previously flagged these changes from 1 Jan 2014 to be bundled with the mining tax repeal, but it's now Sept and the bill hasn't yet been passed.

The ABC fact check site suggests the libs are not doing badly given the degree of obstruction they are dealing with, but there is along way to go.

And you have to remember some of those the ALP are claiming as "broken" are things the ALP floated pre-election as vote-buyers that they may not have delivered themselves if they had won the election.

I'm personally pleased to see Tony's parental leave promise has fallen by the wayside.

So, the Govt gets to repeal the badly written and pro-big mining mining tax and it costs everyone extra super.
Thanks Labor - you haven't fooled me with the media charade.
Don't blame the Govt, don't blame the PUPS, don't blame Bob Day

Ok then jimmy. Explain why us losing the super increase.

If you thought it was badly written why couldn't they have amended it instead of just scrapping it completely? The answer is they didn't want that because the big miners are in their pockets.

Why should they? That would be a broken promise wouldn't it?
The Coalition went to the election saying they would axe the tax
If Labor had let the repeal legislation go through, there would have not been any change to the SGL increases.

I think the case the Liberals are making that cutting the compulsory superannuation rise will put more money in workers' pockets has holes in it in the short term view at least. It may well be that small employers can afford so much and all that will change is the distribution, but it is fairly obvious that big companies are going to play hard ball and try to keep the cash set aside for the planned increase. (I'd have to admit that as both a shareholder whose shares are not earning well, and a long-term social liberal, I have a little personal conflict about this action.)

Perhaps in future the unions will wise up and include a trade off between wage rises and superannuation rises in the agreements, and I was surprised they hadn't when I heard the union leader on radio say they had not. However, they were possibly reluctant to do it this year because they hoped to get the superannuation rise this year and look for a bigger wage rise next time around once the superannuation rise has been locked in.

It is like buying and selling cars or houses - everyone is after the best deal for themselves - not necessarily a fair deal all round.

The Coalition left no-one in doubt that they would get rid of the MRRT if elected yet Labor decided to say *** that, we don't care what the people said, we are going to oppose it.

If the Labor opposition had allowed the repeal legislation through the Senate, this would not have happened. Labor have shot themselves in the foot and are trying to blame everyone else, but it is their fault. They just want to try to prove everything is a broken promise but they are doing everything possible to make them broken promises. Like the previous Labor Govts, promises have to be broken to get anything through a hung Senate.

But, basically, the Govt have traded off another future promise of the former Govt.

Senator John Madigan has quit the DLP and will see out the rest of his term as an independent.

He was on ABC news talking about this before and what I find interesting is that I thought he sort of looked like a poodie as well. And then you called him one. Fascinating.
