possible new salary cap rules for sa local footy

just heard that the sanfl board may be having a meeting to discuss the possiblity of no more salary caps in local football leagues in sa and putting in a points system such as some victorian leagues. such as 1 point for a local player and say 5 points for a player with afl experience and 4 points for sanfl experience. teams will only be able to have so many points allocated to them to use. so if you finish last you will have more points allocated to your team than the top team. the idea being for a closer league and also to help the less financial clubs. anyone else heard about it?

Sounds interesting.

BL&G league already operate under a recruit quota for players outside club zones, but most other clubs only work under the salary cap (which we all know doesn't work).

I'll chase that up with our local league chief.

Like the sound of a point system without understanding the intimate details, but don't like the idea of teams getting handicapped depending on ladder position......that's what the promotion/ relegation system is for.

Talking about it in the R.M.F.L. Have heard 34 points max when you pick a side.

But not all comps have relegation etc - only the ammos in the city do.

I wonder what counts as AFL experience. Does tha include just being on the list, but not actually playing?
Not that that will be much of a problem here in the Riverland - very few former AFL players come here.

What if an AFL or SANFL player sticks around for 3 or 4 seasons, likes the club and stays. Why should that club always have more points for that player? Or is it only for their initial year?

valid question but i don't no the full rulings of this. only heard a brief explenation. it pretty well is a player ranking system. such as in mt lofty case with trigger playing reserves he would probably be worth 3 points as thats possible what a reserve player would be rated. also a local such as dawes may not be any points as is a local and has come thru juniours and so on. as i said don't no the full details but believe it would be interesting. think meeting some time next week. interesting on point system what lofty would be, may have cracked the ton!

Each year an outsider stays with a club a point is deducted.

The AFL/SANFL experience works on games played. So an AFL player with over 50 games is worth 5 points <50 = 4 points, SANFL player with >50 games = 4 points <50 = 3 points and so on. Unless that player came through your club's junior grades then they are worth the standard 1 point.

The amount of points a club is allocated can also be determined by the population size of the town (country leagues only) so the bigger the town, the less points they are allocated.

I think it could work quite well as the current system ($ salary cap) doesn't work at all in the Hills e.g. Mt Lofty, Torrens Valley.

Here we go...
C'mon, back to the Mt Lofty payment issue. Where has all that talk been when other hills teams spent big?
Can we leave that one alone.
I think using population size as another consideration is then getting a bit anal. Some clubs share areas and some draw players from outside their 'traditional' area. That'd be hard to measure.
The theory of a point being deducted per year is great. A club shouldn't suffer just because a recruit would like to hang around.
I see the system as pretty hard to keep on top of though.

The Gimp = Broken record

Someone should smash you once and for all.

This would be a pity for the Devils - Chris Judd would take too many points up. He'd probably get a run in the Super B's though! Maybe off the pine or a back pocket!

I think JQ that if you continue to read past Mt. Lofty there was mention of Torrens Valley, who if I remember correctly are another Hills team that spend big?
Fair enough Lofty have copped a bit of a sledge regarding this on hear all year but I reckon that the previous post really was just a comment, not really a sledge.

The points system could prove interesting for the coaches and selectors, perhaps a few even longer thursday nights around the selection table as everyone adds up the points in the side making sure they don't breech the cap!

I didn't want to appear precious, just that it is a broken record, and I can't speak for TV.
One BIG problem on selection night is that some players will not be picked on merit, but because they're not worth the same points. That's not right.

it is actually easier to keep a record of this system than the salary cap. no one investigates the salary cap in hfl. every player has a record of clubs and div played in and the hfl would have acces to this. in terms of selection you would pick your best 25 players at start of year. you might start by going over your allocation by say 5 points which would be 2 or so good players s to balance out injuries. there are alot of pros and cons but i aint seen the exact document outlaying the rules yet. maybe someone like trigger may half half a point taken away every year he stays at the devils.

Guilty concience DA and JQ??? I have never mentioned anything about Lofty breaking the salary cap or over spending I just stated I don't think the $ salary cap is working.

What's all this "smash" talk. Can't you handle someone else voicing their opinion?

Not at all, Gimp. Opinion away.
I'm pretty sure you DID mention Lofty, you blatantly say that the SC doesn't work for them or TV. You even quoted yourself just above here...see it??

$35k I believe.

They should only programme ten games if they want teams to stay under that amount, one would think. I reckon a few of the lower sides would even give that amount a nudge. Maybe the points system is worth a go. As the system states, everyones record is available and the points are handed out accordingly.

Smash a broken record - it's an analogy, didn't mean to confuse you.

You clearly state that the salary cap didn't work and then name Lofty. If that's not saying we broke the cap then I'll cut my snapper off. That's like stabbing someone, then rocking up to court with blood on your hands you idiot. Oh sorry, no analogies...if forgot.

ALL HFL clubs have been paying players for years, lets face it. Don't single out 1 or 2 and expect us to sit here and not say a word in our clubs defence.

Anyway, who cares if we pay Trigga's missus $5,000 per week to take meal orders in the kitchen!!!!!!

Fair Call DA. Why dont you guys just play 10 games a year to stay under the budget?? Have the other six games off, rest the blokes legs, and be primed for finals!! You'd only need 6 or8 wins or so to make the five they way some of the other teams are fumbling around. Seriously though, everyone opens their wallets, its who they hand it to that counts? If other clubs were more wiser with who they pay there wouldnt be any whinging.
