NTFL?

Postby Pseudo » Sat Oct 21, 2006 2:03 pm

Anyone know when the NTFL starts? Is there any coverage here (eg late night on ABC2)? Websites? etc?

For those of us for whom cricket is a worse alternative than watching fingernails grow, perhaps some NTFL coverage would help to cope with the off-season ennui.

Just watched the Tiwi Island Bombers first game in the NTFL, they had a 34 point win over St Marys. Good to see Dean Rioli go back up and play for his grassroots area, even if it is only for a guest stint.

He used to play for Waratahs up there. I thought he'd go back to them.
Any other scores? How'd the Buffaloes go?

I played two season up in the NTFL for tahs and the spped that these guys move has to be seen to be beleived. Have always said that you make i mistake in darwin and the ball is on the other half back line. They just dont have the body size to compete against the sanfl teams down here. If they could recruit a spine(bigger blokes to play key position) they could be very dangerous.

you must have been watching the pre season comp, pag.
because in the first game st mary's got up over the tiwi bombers by about 7 points.
one of my good mates is coaching st mary's, just moved from adelaide to coach them, was a huge win for them seeing as they got pumped the week before by the same team....

Until they turn the ball over on the half forward line and the ball goes up the other end for another mistake then back down the other end.

Yep they have flashy skills but in may ways their decision making and skill execution isn't that flash IMHO having watched NTFL footy since 1983-84....

the reason skill execution isn't as slick as down south is because of the extra pressure up there with blokes getting chased down from all spots, your not sure where the next place you are going to get hit is. bit of extra training and a few bigger bodies and the difference would be unbelievable, if you ask me which your probably not.

Aah memories. Used to live backing onto Marrara Golf Course with Football Park on the other side. Great to have a five minute walk to watch the footy, cricket ect. Great games to watch, plenty of skills on show and youd always leave the ground wondering how a certain passage of play actually managed to happen

I played NTFL way back in the 80's when living in Katherine, we had a side in the comp briefly before forming our own comp.

Katherine Roos were successful when we were in B's only, were promoted to A's in 87 but all league teams complained about coming down the 300kms to Katherine (once a year each, we went to Darwin 2 out of every 3 weeks) and finished bottom in A's so formed our own comp instead.

NTFL was great comp back even then with each club having a few blokes either from SANFL/VFL or locals who had given it a shot in SANFL/WAFL.
Played my first league game as a 16yo against the mighty St Marys on a wing against Noel Long (one of the 6 Long brothers), great memories playing at Gardens Oval before Marrara was built. Played U19's against a short fat Forward pocket from Southern Districts called Nathan Buckley, whatever happened to him?

NTFL with the right backing and set up could be competetive in SANFL if they would be able to attract the right mix of players.

Played for Balranald this year, 1500 a game he was on. They made the grand final Singh didn't go on the ground after half time in GF as they hadn't paid him for any of the finals games. They lost by a couple of goals. Played for Mooroopna the previous year in the Goulburn Valley.

is that true or a piss take that he did not rock up after half time. That man has made more money out of footy than any player playing in any league

Got run out of town basically after doing the dirty on his employer (will not repeat what he is alleged to have done for obvious reasons)

Was useless up there would sulk if the ball wasn't kicked to him properly...
