Thought this place needed a thread to put in recollections about the long lost SAFA competition.
I remember watching Elizabeth play in this comp as a kid and loved going to all of the subruban grounds.
It got great coverage on tv, radio and in the Football Times, another great name from the past.
I played for Pooraka, in under 17s, as the competition was dying.
It was a great competition.
Share your memories.

I have been trying to get some footage of matches from Channel 9 and Footy Budgets from the SAFA for a number of years now without luck. Hopefully someone can help me or failing that, we get many responses here so that I am able to form a better comparison of the SAFA to the VFA (which is what I am more familiar with).

I believe i played with you. Good times
One good memory i had watching SAFA as a kid was when Pooraka would play great rivals Edwardstown at Pooraka on a Sunday arvo. There used to be so many people there right round the ground creating a brilliant atmosphere.

Those were big games.
I only had two seasons at the Bulls but went to a few A grade games and they were massive.
I could never get used to the oval running east/west though!
In div 2 - there was always a huge rivalry between Elizabeth and Salisbury North.

Did you have Andy Carne and Tony Noble as your coaches?

Plympton played in the last few seasons in the comp, from 90 to i think 95... Prett good comp... Highlights were watching the u/17's beat salisbury nth in 92 and the c's beating them aswell in 94.. we also played in 2 A grade GF's, 1 against Pooraka in 1990 and the other vs Henley in 1992, we lost both..... Never played in the comp, as i was too young. used to goal and boundary umpire to help out... Also GF days were good (besides the fact we weren't playn) held at richmond oval.. used to get a free feed and drinks all day because footy directors and there families were invited to the pavillion at the oval...

Plympton - another east west ground!

I have some SAFA football budgets of 1979,1980. A CDFA Handbook 1988. Also some SAFA year books of the 80,s and the inaugural programme book of 1978, interesting reading.

Did you mean Sat arvo or did it change? I played for Pooraka when it was a u16 and u18 comp on Sundays, seniors played on Saturdays except for some Sunday games at Adelaide Oval.

Ron Todd at Pooraka has some amazing scrap books put together from as far back as the mid 80s right through to the end of SAFA. Ronny works behind the bar at the club most days and loves to get the books out on past player days. Two seasons ago there would have been a 10 ft long table with them stacked on, bloody brilliant stuff to read through. I still have a Footy Times from 89 on the match review when the Bulls KO,d Edwardstown in the GF. What a game, for those that were there they would recall an all in brawl on the Townies half forward line in the middle of the national anthem. Was standing in the middle facing our goals then all you hear is the crowd going nuts, next minute there are blokes running through and past you to get to the action on the back flank, 36 blokes boxing on before a bounce. Ding Dong Murphy the last bloke to get up after we got the Towny blokes off of him still snorting steam.Great memories.

The legendary Albert Richter strung together a double digit plus run of B&F's for I think it was West Lakes?
One of the clubs that is now known as SMOSH/West Lakes anyway.

What years were they? Fair effort.

Hope someone can come on here and clarify but he's 65 now so I assume it was from late 60's to early 80's.
