We voted for it.

We're a club who doesn't recruit many A Graders from other clubs anyway, so we don't think we're in danger of going near the 15 points allocated. But the thought of making our juniors, who are the lifeblood of our club and who go on to make up 90% of our seniors, less accessible to other clubs, and to reward clubs with this positive junior set-up, made it a fairly easy decision for us. As I think it did for a lot of clubs from Div 4-7, who don't go out and buy mountains of players and rely on their kids to keep them going year after year.

i understand why a club like yourselves would vote for it. and i know clubs have to do what is right by themselves. but what about clubs who too be sucessful (play div1/div2) rely on attracting other players from both within the saafl and country leagues? now im not saying i know all the ins and out of the APPS but it seems its not the best option for the WHOLE league.

time will tell i guess

Why do you have to rely on attracting players from other clubs? Old collegians clubs are able to use kids who went to the school as 0-point 'juniors', provided they played 25 games of school football from Years 8-12. Exactly the same as district clubs who need 25 games between U/13-U/18.

There are a lot of positives to it, and I couldn't find a negative.

Under the system, points are to be worked out for season 2011 based on where a player was in 2009. So someone who has been with you a couple of years won't have many points to worry about. Then every year he is with you after that, another point drops off, as it does with every player on your list.

The whole idea of the scheme right around the state is to prevent clubs spending the big bucks that other clubs can't afford to match & stacking their sides.

Nobby Symes from the Barossa, Light & Gawler League was one of the guest speakers. He had absolutely nothing to gain by being there, other than in the spirit of sportsmanship. He stated quite categorically that there were many country clubs with big fat budgets ready to virtually rape the SAAFL of talent if we voted no to the affiliation.

The money would be so big, and carrying no points because we weren't involved - country clubs were about to go beserk & when you are talking sometimes $2000.00 a week from some clubs, you CAN see why the players would go.

Teoboy.........the colleges are being given a zero rating for any lad who played 25 games for the college as a 12-18yo. Even if that lad goes on to AFL and then comes back to his college the year after he retires from the AFL - zero points.

SAAFL are to operate within the basic guidelines of the CFL, however - the SAAFL does have the right to grant & support concessions. It also has the right to have certain conditions altered to suit the SAAFL as an individual body.

I think you'll find the clubs who voted for this tonight had done their homework pretty well, there were a lot of questions asked and answered. The more one read on the merits of the APPS, and the more one heard at the meeting tonight - it became pretty clear to most I think and that is why the count was so one-sided.

Why should div 6 A Grade sides have the same amounts of allocated points as div 1 clubs? Lets be honest clubs are where they are for a reason, whether it's money (Which doesn't last for ever) or a solid club structure. The only positive it has is that it makes it real difficult for club hoppers. Going to be some good B grade sides around!!

I thought Nobby spoke really well, and his honesty was refreshing. I didn't know that SAAFL players heading out to the country would be worth zero points if the SAAFL voted no tonight, that fact in itself might've scared a couple of clubs into voting yes.

End result is that it is democracy and whether for or against it, the Clubs have voted which is all anyone can ask. This is better being done up front, rather than behind closed doors as is often the case with some issues. Personally am not a big fan of the idea but at least the Clubs voted which all you can ask

Maybe so good players stay at SANFL clubs for less money than going to country clubs for more? Maybe they couldn't care less?

In any case, last nights straw polling needs to be ratified at the SAAFL AGM.

It is a manageable system which is something not even JC could do with the Salary Cap.
Whilst initially against it, must say the thought of zero points for player movement out of the SAAFL and into country leagues could decimate manyl SAAFL clubs, and not only the top few divisions either.
Talking to Nobby before the meeting, he gave me some $$ numbers and names clubs in the BL&G were looking at, frightening if they eventuated.

Why fix something that ain't broke??

Which club outside of Div 1 has truly benefited from spending exorbitant amounts of money e.g. won multiple premierships?? I can't think of one.

No need for a points system. Clubs who decide to go down the path of spending big do it at their own detriment. Money doesn't buy long term success.

What ws pushed at the meeting was that the system was really to fix a problem outside of the SAAFL but needed the clubs acceptance to do that. The country leagues are fully aware that big spending clubs in the country are making their leagues uneven and this is the solution to try and combat that. Without all leagues being on the same page the leagues that aren't would suffer and there was a fair chance if we didn't accept it it would have been us.

Saying that I am not that happy that an information meeting that was set for October suddenly became a psuedo meeting to commit to something in November.

You should all be thanking the people who voted for it!!!!

If it didn't come in, then ALL SAAFL CLUBS would have become 0 points for your players to ALL COUNTRY LEAGUES. Now imagine the feeding frenzy that would have caused, especially with sides like Torrens Valley, Kingston, Langhornes etc etc with seemingly endless budgets

yeh just got sent the revised system. as you say seems they may have actually gotten it right. (as well as they could)
still though, schools with a non football background who rely on imports ie cbc will struggle out of this. and area's like the port will eventually struggle with so many teams in a constricted area. but again we'll see

It will be interesting to see how some A grade sides shape up next season and a few tough decisions will have to made for some players who may no longer fit.

Personally i think its a system that will work and helps clubs like mine who put time and effort into developing and promoting the juniors into seniors. We are in a better position to keep them from raids by other clubs.

But the system doesnt aid clubs such as Kilburn who will struggle as a result due to the ethnicity of the surrounding suburbs that are not AFL compatible

it was an informative session and i think answered most of the outstanding questions that clubs had. there is no doubt some fine tuning to do but only once using it can that really happen.

this will create an interesting recruiting environment now given that clubs have no doubt started for 2011 and will need to address what their carry over points are from 2010 to then know what they have left to aim for. it's going to create a real juggling act for footy directors and coaches.

not sure how '25 games of school football' will be managed to ascertain a zero point player playing for an OS club as this would be largely unknown compared to 25 games played as a junior at a club where there would be accurate records.
