Thanks for that.
I notice the VAFA has mostly Old Boys sides as GF competitors - culturally do those teams dominate the registrations in that competition, or was it just an odd year?

Of the 70 odd clubs in the 'Ammos' there are roughly 45-50 'School' sides in the comp. so they naturally dominate the comp.
The other are made up of 'district' sides (ie clubs named after suburbs) and the odd social club ie AJAX (Associated Judaic Athletic Clubs) , Power House and university teams, University Blacks, University Blues, Monash Blues, Latrobe University.

LOL, that is the one I knew.

See Golden Square play South Bendigo in the Bendigo League this weekend.

Have friends who's lad plays for the Gisborne Bulldogs, so keep an eye on them.

IIRC Greg Williams played for Golden Square too.....

Monash Gryphons are another uni team - do Swinburne and the Institute of Tech/Teachers still have a team? Have Old Carey been in the top division before?
They also dominate because it is "pure" amateur football and the top Old Boys can offer, how do you say it, benefits that district teams cannot match. If one wants to get paid to play in the metro area, there are the other metro leagues.

Swinburne do
Teacher's College (I think that's who you are refering to) dropped out about 30+ years ago.
Yes it is the first time in A section for Old Carey.
Great job from them getting there. I recall them playing in G section in the late 80's when they could only field one senior team

I think there was a team called VUT/FIT or something, played out near Footscray, guess they must be gone. Yeah, I remember playing against Old Carey in the early to mid nineties, they were just starting to climbing the divisions helped by recruiting Hawthorn reserves and Old Xavs players.

Footscray Institute of Technology changed it name to Victoria University, so the footy
club went from FIT Old Boys to VUT.
They then merged with University High School Old Boys (UHSOB) to become UHS-VU.

I'd be intrigued to hear who they were - being an Old Carey player currently, I reckon I can guarantee that the Old Xavs recruits you speak of were actually Carey boys who returned to help the club up the grades after exposure at the higher level.
