Important stats?

Postby nuggety goodness » Thu Aug 05, 2010 4:55 pm

Wondering what are the important stats that you/your family/coaches count?

my guess is;

PLAYERS
-Kicks
-Handballs
-Marks
-Goals
-Behinds
-Goal Assists
-Tackles
- 1%'s

COACHES (for both teams)
-Inside 50
-Centre Clearances
-Clearances
-Goals
-Behinds
-Free Kicks

what else is there that is important to you?
I am not talking to you for 3 minutes because you punched me in the head and it hurt and that was not okay for you to do

NG- speaking to a longtime coach at my club, he said simply "You need a player who can take a good contested mark if you want to win a game of football." So there's one vote for the contested mark.

For me, tackles, clearances, Hard Ball Gets rate highly, and ruck taps to advantage.

The way I see it, it doesn't mean a thing if you're ruckman is winning everything, if he doesn't put it to your advantage.

Once it's to your advantage, the clearance is easy.

Running bounces out of D50 is one I look for also...

But you cannot win a game unless you kick a higher score than your opponent (Media Park being Capt Obvious), so goals too.

coaching for the first time this year
the things as a coach i really looked for in players/were important stats for me were
- taclkes
- shepards
- 1%'s
- effective kicks
- contested marks
- goals

one thing that isnt a statistic obviously but is just as important as a kick in some cases is TALK!
that will go along way to helping you win a game! So loved a player who would talk

With the way the game have been going in recent years statisticians should do some tinkering (especially with regard to quality)

Effective Kicks
Effective Handballs (10m+ ... this 3 metre 'to you-to me-and back-and back again' crap should be ignored)
Marks
Goals
Behinds
Tackles
1%'ers

COACHES (for both teams)
Inside 50
Centre Clearances
Clearances
Goals
Behinds
Free Kicks
Spoils
Tackles (ones 'Causing Turnovers' and also 'Overall Total')
Unbroken Chains (movements from defensive 50 into a mark inside 50 and was not broken by the oposition)
Broken Chains (failure to do above and where the breakdown occurred - eg consistently breaking down on the wing means there is an issue with delivery one kick out from the forward 50)

Stats which I think are important in a game of footy-

Contested Possessions
Hard ball gets
Effective Disposals
Total Tackles
Tackles inside forward 50
Clearances
Marks inside forward 50
Frees- For and Against.
Goals

Disposals mean nothing to me.

We keep stats and blokes get 30+ and get treated like gods, but when I play CHF and provide a contest ALL day for say 5 marks, few frees for and 12ish disposals it is just another game.

In basketball where stats are everything they look at rebounds (marks), points (goals) and assists (score assist).

A triple double is a very good game.
They don't count the guys who always have the ball and pass around all day.

So the only stats that matter to me are:

Marks
Goals
Score Assists
1% (includes tackles, smothers, spoils, talk, sheperds, blocks and manning up)

10+ 1% is far more beneficial than 30+disposals.

I reckon some of things that should be looked at are clangers, turnovers, tackles that dont stick, fumbles, getting outmarked. The opposite of the good things. If you weed them out then that is half the problems gone. These are all the things where I had high numbers in my day!

Id love for a bloke to have 10+ 1% rather then 30 handballs
cause it just shows he is putting his game aside for the better of the team.

forget taking petty stats in country footy, its usually pretty clear when you watch a game of country footy, why one team is better than the other, its usually the level of intensity (which is reflected in the tackling pressure) and the skill level of the players, these factors require an adequate approach to playing each week, possibly to do with motivation, and adequate preparation in training (skills and fitness). Just my thoughts.. :) Thus win/loss stats are all that matters!

Ha, don't ever become a defender then, you'll really know what it's like to have your efforts taken for granted!

A two time AFL premiership coach constantly says, tackle count means NOTHING. If you have possession of the ball more than the opposition then your teams tackle count should be less than the oppositions.

If your getting beat then tackles causing a turnover or a ball up mean much more than an ineffective tackle that allows the opposition player to get the ball out to another team mate.

Efficiency forward of centre; such as hittn the full forward, handball at a stoppage getting to another player etc etc. In the back half it doesn't need to be clean, but it is better being effective once forward of centre. Old saying of a past coach back in the day, "to win, you've gotta come off the ground with the highest score!" Sounds simple doesn't it :)

Sometimes we get a bit fancy with all the stats.

Pretty simple analysis

1. Win/ Loss record. The more you win the better you are
2. %. The higher the % the more you win by
3. Frees for and against. The more frees you get should mean you are playing in front and playing the ball.
Or if you are in the SAAFL the umpires are no good.
4. Reported players. The more reported players your club has you either play the man not the ball or you have discipline problems
5. Clearances. You win the clearances, You have the better onballers and possibly a better ruckman....Time to recruit if you lose the clearances.
6. More behinds than goals. Team lacks skill...work on it. Or it is windy that day
7. Turnovers. Lack skills again
8. Tackles. If you get no tackles that means you have the ball all the time. If you have heaps of tackles...means you gotta get the ball more
9. one percenters. What are you doing the other 99% of the time. work harder you are lazy
10. In front at half time and lose every week. Not fit enough
11. you come off the ground clean. Time to get down and get dirty...probably play for a college
SO MANY IDIOTS
SO FEW BULLETS

I thought you were keeping it simple...

Simplest way of keeping stats, let someone else do it!

Or if you really care about how your going, Your teams Win's and Loss'...

Who cares if you had 100 kicks, 80 handball recieves, laied 70 tackles and took 400 marks? It's Amature footy, if you wanted to count your stats at the age of 20 odd, maybe you should have worked harder when you were 14/15/16!

Just win games, enjoy your Saturday nights and come Monday morning count down for Friday afternoon! If you manage to win a flag, appriciate it, as it may be the last you ever win!

i think mark corey started doing possessions goals tackles marks etc. at the start of the year but he thought it was a bit misleading. so he instead brought in a system where if you did a positive thing i.e tackle smother effective kick/handball, mark goal you get plus 1 ineffective kick-handball not chasing not spoiling was minus one. good sytem i thought gave a much more accurate represenattion of how individulas were playing.
