booze on a friday night

Postby piccachu » Fri Mar 26, 2010 11:17 am

was just wandering what rules or guidlines other clubs have on drinking of a friday night before a game.
Our coach has said several times he has no problem with the boys having 6 or so beers of a friday night as long as there not out till a rediculous time of night and rock up on the saturday in a good frame of mine. a few times boys have mistaken 6 beers for 6 darwin 2L stubbies but appart from that i think it works. im really interested to know what other clubs do?

I have always said, its not really how much you drink on a Friday night that affects you. Its how much sleep you get.

When i coached, i couldnt care less if blokes went out Friday nights - as long as it didnt effect their game on the Saturday. If it does, then they were out to long.

Grog's fine as long as you cut it to six and as long as you sleep and do not have sex you should wake up ready to go.
Have sex and it is all over - that's the ole myth isn't it.

Kevin Sheedy in the lead up to the 1993 Grand Final banned all the players from having sex for the entire week.
I played the best game I ever played after a huge night out, mind you I have never done it since.
If you drink and know a nurse of some sort hook them up for a banana bag the next day and you'll pull up cherry ripe ;) .

have played some of my best footy after getting tanked on a friday night.

also went an entire season (pre season included) without a single drink on a friday night & had played my worst season ever.

I'm one for no drinking on a friday night before a game. Its a respect thing, if you want you and your team to play well on a saturday you shouldn't be drinking on a friday night. I did the other week when we played a trial, I went out, didn't drink got a good night sleep played well on the saturday and it was all good. So I for one will not be drinking on friday night during the season if i'm playing the next day.

=D> Finally, common sense prevails. Dark Knight you are the only post on this topic who is thinking from a team perspective and not a selfish "it works for me" point of view. All the "players" who say they've had huge nights on the booze and been brilliant the next day - like Grenville Deitrich always claims.. never fess up to all the shockers they played after being hung over and a liability to their team and club the next day. It's not rocket science fellas - prepare properly and give yourself the best chance to play at your best. If you can't get through a Friday night without alcohol for the sake of your team, then what kind of team player are you ???

Not a very good one I would think, lets hope some guys can think about their team instead of themselves for a change

lance armstrong has to glasses of wine the night before every big race and i think its fair to say it worked for him, and im not talking about getting tanked just a couple of quiet ones of a friday night after work. im all for it, as long as
as people stop after a half dozen or so.

A 6'er calms the nerves.
You need to relax after work, watch Friday night footy and prepare the mind.
Saturday morning prepare the body with hydration of the H2O variety.

The Sat morning HJ works a treat aswell...

I can't imagine that one or maybe two drinks on a Friday night at home is no worse than having two cans of coke. Getting smashed is a no no. On a cold, wet saturday a few sips of port does not go astray at half time. Going out walking around town all friday night does the legs no good as does spending all day at the show.

In my experience....
1.Thursday night sessions are worse than a big session on friday.
2. Sleeping with an electric blanket turned on all night, absolutely drains you.
3. More groins are damaged having sex than playing footy.
4. If you have the flu, DO NOT Play. Every knock hurts 3 or 4 time more.
5. Climb trees.....have you ever seen a monkey with a bad back?
6. Remember, Coaches and club sponsors have eyes and ears every where so do not go out late on a Friday even if you are not drinking.
7. Everything in moderation.

This is quick becoming the funniest link on this web site.
I beleive alot of these posts are toungue and cheek. People are naieve if they think all 22 players in each team (of which majority do not get paid) are staying grog free on Friday nights.
Most how ever have a medium of which know their limits.
Hell you hear the stories every year that teams are out on the Friday night before a Grand Final with their shirts on (All are dead set crap).
A mate of mine who I beleive is the best amatuer footballer in SA is a notorious Friday night reveler, does not stop him from Kicking 10 and having 30 touches the next day.
I saw a former Greenacres div 1 premiership player have numerous beers at half time and then go out and kick 8 goals in the 2nd half, there is stories every where.
I dont do it because I am ordinary even at 100%, if I feel crook im even worse. Got away with it once, but as I said I make no habbit of it.

I have never understood the theory of no sex Fri night or Sat morn. It is a must have for me. As far as drinking goes, itis not AFL, nor SANFL, this is country footy, a few beers, knowing your limitations ad getting some sleep is fne, if you know you can do it.

And p.s., it's not selfish, a 21 or 22 player team is made up of 21 or 22 individuals. Each individual knows how to get themselves up for a game, this makes a successful team!

IMO only of course :D
