The North Eastern Metro Junior Football Association have cancelled ALL games until further notice due to the breakout of 'swine flu' at a couple of Adelaide schools.

Sienna College & Blackfriars have been closed down and the NEMJFA, acting on legal advice, has put all junior games on hold until otherwise notified.

Your club should have received the same info about 30 minutes ago.

I bet all the kids are hoping that all schools are shut down for a while, swine flu or not!

No teams are not allow to train either, we also had a couple of social events for the kids lined up for the coming week at broadies that we have had to cancel as well. The Association have stated that they will review the situation later in the week but there is to be no games and no training for 1 week at this time..

From the website

ALL GAMES IN THE NEMJFA THIS WEEKEND 24/5/09 HAVE BEEN CANCELLED AND CLUBS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED.
The association has taken legal advice and will be in contact with the Health Department when it will be advisable for clubs to resume training. All players health and safety are of paramount concern to the Association.

SANFL advice please check over the link for information and suggestions re: swine flu is http://www.flu.sa.gov.au/Swineflu.aspx.

There is also a hotline available for any other questions, this can be accessed by calling 180 2007.

Found this to be quite interesting that all games of football cancelled yet saw article in paper where kid has been sent home from school and placed into home quarantine and his school closed to prevent spread of the flue yet the kids parents and siblings are free to come and go as they please from the house after having contact with him . How does this work?

I just don't get this really. Sure - HAVE to be careful about this "epidemic" but there seems a small amount of logic is apllied here.

So - some boys from a particular school "might" have had contact with a confirmed case....okay - I get that. But isn't it likely that those boys have been to training and had contact already with other boys who have now had contact at their own school. I mean, how far do we take this?

Surely - if it's a legal standpoint on this - isn't the legal argument to prove that a person became infected wth said virus and died as a result of their contact during a football match? It just seems so incredibly bizzare.

And what about this week, if a child at, say Walkerville Primary, is confirmed - do we shut down the whole competition for another week?

I am not saying we need not be vigilant - but i just don't get the small logic applied here. Boys and teams "affected" (i.e attend Blackfriars) stand down for a week - and let the rest of us get on with life? Catch up matches can be slotted in where necessary.

OVER REACTION by a large degree, I think.

Sienna is West Suburbs not NE suburbs and an all girls school at that, I can't imagine any 13-18 year old girls partaking in Aussie Rules. Over cautious IMO

Was the girls brother that attends Blackfriars, who is also the son of the Old Scholars trainer.

Over reaction maybe so in hindsight, but from NEMJFA's pov & legal advice their hands were tied this weekend, not a hell of a lot was known until Friday night.
As an example Broadview, Fitzroy, Walkys, Geppys & maybe a few more clubs have Blackfriars boys playing for them, they would have all trained with the lads from other schools through the week, no one had much of a clue how fast or lethal this pig thingy is so they had to err on the side of caution. That was the legal advice, not much can be done from that.
If, even that was overlooked, there would have been a nightmare of games as late forefits, eg Broadys u15's have 11 Blacks boys in their team (I believe), I'm not sure how many other of their teams would have been affected. I know that Fitzroy have 10 in their 11's & 7 or so in the 15's so all those teams would have had to be late withdrawls, imagine the nightmare of managers trying to contact their players on a Sunday morning to let the players know to stay home, especially with siblings playing earlier games.
FWIW, I reckon NEMJFA did the right thing.
Fitzroy are back in training this week minus the Blacks boys, & I'd wager the other clubs will take the same stance. The incubation periods over this Friday so I;d reckon she'll be back to normal this coming weekend.

I just got an email tonight saying games will resume Friday night/Sunday as per usual. Im sure clubs would of been informed over night.
And Cover King is right. IT was a family..and the boy had contact with people at school who play for several different clubs hence the cancelation. But all back to normal...My cousin missed winning his 100th by 64 points as they played friday night still lol
