Side effects of frequent use of Nurofen??

Postby dodgingandweaving » Wed Apr 22, 2009 12:42 pm

Any astute medico's out there know much about Nurofen?

Due to shin-splints, the only thing getting me through games and training is Nurofen.

3-4 times a week (training, match-day, and an extra running session if i can) i'm swallowing 4 pills. so 12-16 per week.

Would there be any side-effects from taking this amount???

Probably immunity to the drug. And it will have affect on your liver as has to detoxify every pill you drop. 16 per week is no good. You may break out into a rash to, think its called Hives.

You would be advised to go see a Sports doctor and get them to prescibe a proper pain killer other than neurofen so the dose is monitored an your liver is not affected. You will find the pain killer will be much more effective

Stop taking them! I know a lad that has become reliant on them and they have had a nasty effect on the lining of his stomach. Costant use is not recommended, read the label because it says that "if symptoms persist, consult your GP"

D & W- are you taking the 4 tabs at once? Probably not ideal if so. It is metabolised in the liver so obviously the more you put in at once the more your liver is working to break it down...

Use only an issue really if you are asthmatic or had a history of Gastrointestinal bleeding (I take it you are young enough not to have severe renal, heart or hepatic failure, and you arent pregnant!).

You shouldnt get any lasting side effects but as with any medication try to get off them as soon as you can.

Get the shin splints taken care of. I recommend a couple of weeks off playing/training. Sucks in the short term but at least you will be right for the business end of the season.

Thanks MatteeG.

I'm taking 2 four hours before game/training, and then another 2 an hour before game/training. Have had asthma a while ago but haven't been affected by it recently.

Speak to your trainer, it is possible to strap your ankles/foot in such a away to reduce the pressure on your shins. I know the pain you are going through I had my podiatrist stuff things up and a side effect was shin splints on only one leg. After speaking with my trainer he strapped the affected leg and the pain was instantly reduced and recommended icing it after every running session. It eventually went away

It should prevent your from popping pills like you are at a disco

Had an injured ankle last season and was using Nurofen plus a far bit early on in the injury and it bloked me up big time!! Pretty sure Nurofen Plus contains codene which in turn can cause constipation! had to take four in three hours at one point, happy days!

Nurofen Plus has a small amount of codeine in it, 8mg per tablet IIRC. Plain old Nurofen contains only Ibuprofen - nasty sh*t.

I'm saying Ibuprofen is pretty nasty stuff, as are most anti-inflammatories. I have a prescription for Feldene, which they don't give to aged people anymore because they had a habit of bleeding out internally, and use it very sparingly. I would use any anti inflammatory sparingly, you need to look at other methods.

Certain strapping techniques can be used. Also look into Bowen Therapy, a form of massage that should increase blood flow to affected area.

I use Elmore Oil for my knee, to reduce swelling and help ease the irritating pain : http://www.elmoreoil.com.au/

Elmore Oil was on A Current Affair the other week, it is used for all sporting injuries and arthritis etc.

I would highly recommend it.

Ice, Ice, Ice....and rest

Its the best method. Strapping can help a bit, but its not doing anything to help the problem, which will only get worse - to the point where you can hardly walk. I went through it for about 3-4 years straight.

Best thing is to have a few weeks off, then ease into it. Fill up two polystyrene cups with water, and place in the freezer. When frozen peel off a couple of centimetres around the top, and use this to rub up and down your shins. When it melts down to the edge, peel off some more. Do this after every time you run, and it should help heaps - did with me!
I'm proud of you fellas. You all kept your head on a swivel, and that's what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cock fight!

...oh and also keep your calves stretched, and if you are flat footed, get something in your shoe to correct it.

Stomach problems are most common from them
Ulcers, damaged lining, etc
Make sure you have eaten recently before taking them, never take them on an empty stomach
Might wanna have some Metamucil handy too ;)
