Player Auctions

Postby devilsadvocate » Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:34 pm

G'day All

Our club is looking at running a player auction in 2010.

Just wondering what format your club uses?

ie:

- How many players get auctioned? A graders only?
- How much does the club keep/how much goes into the payout kitty?
- Do you do both home and away payouts or just home games?
- How many players are paid out on each week?
- How/Who is it judged by? How many judge best players?
- What problems have you had/seen in the past?

Thanks in advance.

A grade squad selected of approx. 25...rest go into 1 0r 2 wildcards which are auctioned
- How much does the club keep/how much goes into the payout kitty?

Depends on how much is made through the auction
- Do you do both home and away payouts or just home games?

Both
- How many players are paid out on each week?

Our club used to pay out on the best 2 players.
- How/Who is it judged by? How many judge best players?

Either random judges each week or whoever was awarded best two by the coaches
- What problems have you had/seen in the past?

People paying their money!!! As you cant pay out until you have received the cash!
Thanks in advance.

Cheers TR. That's fairly close to the model we're looking at going with. I like the Wildcard - that's a great idea.

To clarify, in terms of how much the club keeps v how much is paid out, I'm just wondering what rough %'s other clubs use.

We're probably looking at something like 40% to the club, 60% paid out.

We Auction about 25 players plus the coach
Club keeps 100%. 0% gets paid out from the kitty.
Can't have it any simpler than that!
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

so it's not a player auction as such which this thread is referring to. It's basically a player sponsorship.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

lol.. MC you would raise about $16K at a guess?

Bum Crack - people do bid for the players, so I guess its called a player auction. North Adelaide's Late Don Lindner used to run the auction. Go the Tige's

It's not the type of player auction that this thread refers to though. That's what I was getting at.

My apologies! I thought the original question asked what format your club uses. Sorry for answering that. 8)

Froggy, yes the great Don used to run the Auctions and the last two years we have found impossible to replace the energy the great man created. The amount raised does vary, but it would have to be an extremely exceptional night to raise that amount of coin!

Yes, our Auction is one to raise money for the club, but the incentive is the potential of a return on your investment.

As opposed to a Player SPONSORHIP Auction like they do at SANFL, AFL level etc. I guess the incentive there is that if your sponsored player gets in the best, you get a free plug at presentations and on the club website etc.

At the Grove S.C our auction is slightly different,

We have a set price to enter then everyone who has bought a ticket goes into a draw, we draw one of 16 players in the squad out first, then pull a name of a ticket holder out and thats who has the person for the year, this continues on until the 16th person is left with the only player left.

Advantages are prices don't sky rocket so lots of people can be involved, the draw is very random so it's not most money gets the best player, being a random draw adds the excitment.

im not sure if they still do it but north haven used to have a good system i think you bid for your players then if they get BOG in 100 2nd $75 and 3rd $50

i think a few players were going for near on a grand, so im pressuming the club did reasonably well out of it.
i think people were jumping in syndicates.

Last year we did 7 groups & 1 Mystery bag, which is pretty much anyone else that is not in a group

Pull all of the As Bs and u/18s in the groups. I think the club got about 40%.

Dividends paid for
1st best in As
2nd best in As
3rd best in As
BOG in Bs
BOG in u/18s

Get in touch with someone at Mt Barker FC for their ideas, they run the best player auction I've come across.
