Hi guys,

A quick question, what would you (a regional footy fan) want on an ideal sports/football website?

By regional we mean outside of the SANFL, but still within the wider Adelaide region -- ie amateurs, hills, southern, great southern etc

Is cool - was wondering if a Messenger expansion was happening ;)

When I'm back in town, I always read the Northern Messenger (or whichever one is based where I'm staying), and am very disappointed in the sports coverage, let alone the lack of local football coverage. Quite often the sport stories are far too generic and there's little coverage of the 'every man', the people who generally read the paper.
The Messenger could really distinguish itself from Big Brother (The Tiser) if it localised its sports coverage and stepped away from puff pieces on people like Darren Lehmann or Jason Gilliespie etc. For example - a bloke from Salisbury FC recently became the first player in his club's long history to play 300 games. Those are the stories people want to read.
It's great to see coverage of SANFL, but I would suggest a page, or maybe two, in each of the Messenger papers, covering the ammo clubs in that zone would be more than appropriate.
I'm sure there are plenty of potential advertisers who could see the benefit in sponsoring such a page.

More local and less SANFL we can read that in the 'tiser. a few years back there was a full page on the SFL with votes for each game, leading goalkickers etc.

Agreed. All the Standard Messenger gives is a list of the local clubs results, one or two best players and maybe their position on the ladder. Shows that they have read the Sunday Mail basically.

Possibly, similar to the "Sportsbeat" magazine that gets circulated to most pubs and footy clubs, but if you were to try and cover several leagues you would be running out of room, perhaps look at Amateur Div1 - Div5, most country leagues get reasonable coverage from the local newspaper.

I'm sure there are plenty of "Experts" that can give you the scoop on the different grades, one place to start would be here (which you've done) or listening to 5RPH in the morning (Friday) morning at 7:30 from memory, they have a decent radio program and there are few blokes that know a bit about the Amateurs there.

I am involved in country footy but have several friends who play amateur footy and i don't have the chance to catch up with, but if there was a reasonable write up in the messenger, i might actually give it a read instead of having about 6 copies lying in the driveway!! :D

your joking right?

I think the Messenger should try to cover all clubs within their zone, from the A's -> Z grade (excluding Power & Crows)

Realistically a thorough review and preview of all SANFL sides, League through to Under 17's would be a far better use of Messenger space as we have only mediocre coverage of what is a flourishing football competition, The Advertiser gives the SANFL a bit of news but the Messenger could capture a market that is having to look online for most of it news.

Trying to report on all leagues across the state would require the messenger to be twice the size it is now, but give the SANFL a run, C'mon let's pump em up!
