Heat Policy

Postby carey18 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:19 pm

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on the heat policys of the leagues. Looks like we wont be playing again 2m as our comp says if the temp is 38 or more at 8am on sat play is called off. I am getting sick and tired of games getting called off because of this. Cum on 38 isnt to hot. A lot of clubs are loseing money from games not getting played. Ie no Bar takings and kiosks. Also a bit rough that some people pay big amounts of money for fees and play less games all year. We all no it is only getting hotter each year.
Just my little rant
comments please.

Funny you say that, remember back when I was playing, no heat policy, sure extra drinks breaks etc but played no matter how hot is was, you will come to realise when you give it away and sitting in the aircon comfort of home or a pub, just how silly you can be, I still wonder to this day what I got out of sitting at first slip in 100 degree plus temperatures apart from a bloody big thirst

ASCA's heat policy is 40c, i think this is pretty fair, still get the majority of games in during the year. Maybe carey 18 the clubs should put a motion forward at the next association meeting to get it extended to 40 if it is becoming a problem.

Whyalla has an interesting mode where overs played is relative to forecast temp from 6pm Friday evening.

42 C - game called off
41 C - 30 overs
40 C - 40 overs
39 C - 45 overs
38 C - 50 overs

Overs can be decided on between captains at the time, but if no agreement can be made, the above formula is fallen back upon.

The Hills CA has a 41 degree rule, so 40 we play.....most stupid thing is we take Adelaide's forecast when we are closer to Mt Barker :?

Mind you its always 4-5 degrees cooler up there, shouldnt get above 34 tomorrow 8)

one Saturday a cool change is going to come through about midday and make the temp in the low 20's with all cricket called off :?

A+EHCA is called off if Adelaide is forecast @ 40c + for Sat @ 7.00pm Friday.
Weah as piss as far as i'm concerned as often the temp is a lot lower in the Hills and down at Milang and L.Creek often get Cool afternoon Lake Breezes. FFS at least the 'A' Grade Games should Still go ahead.
The argument against is that the Assoc. has a duty of care to its players BUT then Makes us play on Some Shit ovals that are Rough as Guts that pose a Bigger Injury risk to the players than the weather.

Duty of care my arse.
I once captained a team in the Para districts and it was around 38 degress. The umpire wouldnt let 2 players on the ground as there white brim hat had a nike swoosh on it. If the two players wore the hats they would of been fined. Wankers. All i had to do was cover the swoosh sticker up with some ankle tape. Its a summer sport and to not be playing today is a load of crap.

I'm very disappointed that todays game was called off- a 1 dayer too (ie we wouldn't be out in the field all day)

They need some more sensible policies (increased drinks breaks), instead of abandonment.

One that hangs around as well I hear on the grapevine Punk, must admit I am with you, more drinks breaks etc would do the trick, like they dont call off minor footy league games if it is too cold so why do it for cricket when it is too hot

How many games have you missed due to this policy?

How many club members have you had die on the field?

Cricket is a summer sport, an ENGLISH summer sport where conditions are very different to ours. Most of the competitions with a heat policy in place are social comps where people play for fun, they are not professional athletes in prime physical condition.
There is enough scientific and anecdotal evidence to suggest outdoor activities in such conditions is not safe (even for conditioned athletes).
A lot of these clubs do not have decent infastructure at grounds to accommodate players and spectators on hot days, some have little to no shade or shelter, no running water etc.
Social cricket clubs are not profit orientated organisations and therefore any loss of income should not be an issue.

As much as i like batting in the heat I'm all for a hot weather policy, it's just common sense that only displeases egocentric individuals.
