Would like to read the histories of everyones respective clubs.

GRENFELL MAIL
First club I played for was the Grenfell Mail [later Cental Mail]
I think a group of postal workers formed a club in the sixties ?
I started with the club in 1972 as a schoolkid way way back then.
The club played in Adelaide Turf
Had a Turf team[A grade]
Had a hard wicket team [b grade]
Im not sure when they disbanded.

Cool... Good luck!

Just ask Robbo about Youngster. :D

I've been involved at Rosella St for too long to remember apart from a hiatus in Central Australia. Haven't been able to play for the last couple of years with work and study commitments. Was going to play last weekend in the LODs due to lack of numbers but the weather put paid to that one...

139 years since the Foundation of the club.
There was a guy called Jack [surname might have been Biggell or similar]
He was affiliated with the Payneham club and was a coach at my first club
being Grenfell Mail Exchange or when I was playing for the Commonwealth Bank[late 70s]
He was a solid guy + a crafty meduim pacer and would have been about 40 odd back then
Would have born about 1935 or thereabouts.
Anyone know him ?

I assume Mal you were asking if Payneham was the oldest club in SA..
I can tell you Morphett Vale CC was formed in 1849.

That would be Jack Bickle, I would think Mal. Was a Payneham club legend and life member. IIRC holds the club record for most wickets in a season (any grade)

Faced him at practice where he bowled to me and could make the ball talk.
He was middle aged then, me a teenager, he was far too good for me.
Is the great man still around the traps ?

In the early seventies Richmond had a team in hard wicket Adeliade Turf
There was this old fella called LEE who was a great batsman.
He was a run machine and I got him out and as a 14 year old and was thrilled to bits.
Any info on LEE ?

My club, Fulham, recently celebrated its centenary.

A few years earlier, I was one of the co-authors of our book on the Club History.

Long ago, when we played in Adelaide & Suburban, I was lucky enough to captain the A&SCA Under 21's for a couple of years and at a young age, the A&SCA Senior team for a few successful years.

Although I played most of my time in Adelaide Turf, I really enjoyed the Adelaide & Suburban years.

Yes, I would have played against Mal when he was at Grenfell Mail.

Flinders University Cricket Club aka "the FUCCs"

From our website: http://flindersuni.cricketvault.com/content.aspx?file=1018|11796v

The Flinders University Cricket Club was formed in 1966 (first season 1966/67) and has fielded teams in both the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and the South Australian Cricket Association.

From 66/67 to 82/83, teams were fielded in both the SACA and ATCA. From 83/84 to 90/91 just in the SACA and since 91/92 we have participated solely in the ATCA.

Whilst often competitive, finals appearances were rare in the SACA and the clubs 3 premierships prior to 91/92 were from our lower grades that competed in the ATCA.

The departure from SACA to the fielding of all teams in the ATCA in 91/92 lifted the restriction of only students and post graduates being able to play for the club. This opened the door for more experienced and cricket hardened players to come and join the FUCC.

The last 10 years have easily been the FUCC’s most successful, with regular finals appearances throughout the grades and 3 “A” grade and 1 “B” grade premierships.

We worked our way from our initial ATCA entry point in A3 in 91/92 to the Premier Grade in 95/96. Relegation occurred after the 99/00 and dissapointingly again in 2003/2004,last years A3 Premiership has us once again competing in the A2 Grade.

We currently field 4 sides (3 who play 2-day cricket & 1 limited overs team) and over our history we have always fielded no less than 3 teams in any season.

The following is part of a piece penned by Life Member, Keith Seidel approximately 10 years ago.

“Many players and characters have graced the Flinders Ovals with their exploits, names consigned to history by the unavoidably transient of student sporting clubs. At times there has been controversy but the history of the club is of enjoyment and acceptance that the members are there to play cricket. The cliques that dominate many clubs have rarely surfaced at this great club, and any such indications have been squashed quickly”.

These words best sum up our club as our ethos is to not take ourselves too seriously and enjoy our cricket to the fullest.

Sure, we play to win and we will take any success that comes our way, but there is a certain uniqueness about playing for the FUCC’s and I hope all players, old and new, continue to enjoy their time with the club.

Words by Darren "Potsy" Webber

"Hey, you think that Sturt Rd intersections tough, wait 'til you take guard on FUCC park...."

The Lee in question is RON LEE, here is some info on him...

- The first man from the Richmond Cricket Club to achieve the outstanding double of 400
club wickets and 4000 club runs
- Ron commenced with Richmond in 1958/59
- Richmond bestowed life membership upon Ron in 1970. He
received 15-year player life membership to the ATCA in 1974 and 25-year playing life
membership in 1984.
- Continuing well into his fifties, after many years of being either opening bowler or first
change, Ron moved down through the grades in his later years to captain the hard wicket
side. In one season alone he made four centuries. He also secured a match best of 5 for
35 as a swing bowler and collected a hat trick.

It seems as though he was quite a fair cricketer. he played a fair bit of B grade district at Ports and was trained by Clarrie Grimmett in his youth. A fair start to a boys cricketing career.

RON LEE - RICHMOND.
I got him out cheap bowling leg spin one day.
I didnt know who he was , but was reminded by the senior players.
about how good this Ron Lee was.
I was only a schoolkid and was thrilled.
I still have my trophy for 7 wickets that game.
I will always remember the great Ron LEE when I see that trophy.
Did notice his name come up in the Sunday Mail scores a few times.

Ron can say he saw 2 of the greatest ever spinners GRIMMETT + MAL
