Tend to agree with this, is a no win situation. We all complained they had a team of overseas players last year, they apparently are not going to do that this year, so they have to target players from other Clubs which everyone hates also.

They have requested their own Zones so they can have Junior teams also, but Clubs have rejected this too.

Don't know the solution here, very tricky. Good for players like Brazell that get well looked after!

The solution is obvious, get rid of them

Is this really the best thing for cricket in South Australia?
Young blokes who are developed and encouraged by there clubs only to be poached with financial incentives at a young age!

Can't wait to hear the we don't spend money on player statements again!

Tea Tree Gully did exactly the same thing only a few seasons ago. Plenty of clubs other than Uni have poached good young players from opposition clubs.

I'd be interested in who TTG poached? I feel there is a difference in poaching and actually being 'approached' by a player.

Especially when certain clubs throw $$$ and scholarships around to kids that don't warrant it.

No they haven't which brings a smile to most clubs faces I'm sure.... but i think the point that's being made is that it do you think its fine that a club offers cash, scholarships etc to young players to recruit them!

I'm sure the kid and parents don't mind.
I was a smart kid from a split family that had a promising cricket career but was unable to pursue it to it's fullest.

All clubs poach, whether they are successful at doing so or not. A few really need to get of their high horses that's for sure.

Are you saying that you agree with clubs approaching kids under the age of 18 with money and scholarships to convince them to play for them?

Here is another solution - Uni have no juniors, Eastern Suburbs Junior Cricket club have no seniors and have teams from Under 17 down. Those players that play for ESJCC can stay with their PC club if they have one, and players that aren't aligned to a PC club can become Uni players. All of a sudden Uni get junior sides. Simples!

I actually heard that is one of the proposals Uni have run with before. That they'd form junior teams but only with the players who had missed out on selection at grade clubs.

The grade clubs said no.

Just because your zoned to a particular area, doesnt make you property of a club. If you can be rewarded for the sport you love playing, then why not.

What about the time and effort Grade clubs put into these players seeking a free ride.

Don't forget a lot of these People in Premier Cricket Clubs are volunteers or if they are paid poorly for the time the put in.....

So when they are 12-16 year olds, they are seeking a free ride hey ..... They are still yet to enter the adult world and realise that it isnt all about playing cricket and video games. Money talks, especially in today's modern world. Dont just expect a player to stay for free just because he was lucky/unlucky enough to be zoned to a particular club.

In your job, if you were provided and undertook courses and training's, then offered a position elsewhere with four times the salary, would you stay? Highly unlikely

Won't mention clubs or player but...

One whisper I heard was that a club offered a young player a good financial deal to move clubs. The player didn't really want to leave but hard to knock it back... went back to his club who matched the offer. Didn't want to lose him. Straight away that's x dollars out of grade cricket - not able to be used for coaching, facilities, junior development.

Believe the Academics had a crack at a young Pirate last season, could have had another one at him

Some of the PC Committee members need to get their heads out of their ar$es or better still move on and bring some fresh ideas on board instead of still being in the Bradman era and talking about the good old days :?

What is happening with the Redbacks League these days? I have heard that no first class players are able to participate this season because they will be required for the JLT cup. It seems a lot of funding to use, that could be used for grade cricket, for a program that is essentially set up to develop first class players who are not able to participate. How do Cricket Australia see this program? Surely you would want grade cricket to be the best competition and to be funded to reflect this ?

So if there are no first class players participating, where do the players come from? What about the other first grade players who have to work for an income, why would they want to participate in a program for a group of people they have no affiliation with, for no purpose? It makes no sense to me, am I missing something?

If good quality first grade players and first class players are not participating in the Redbacks league , what is the purpose of this competition?

Are the grade clubs and the players in South Australia given a chance to provide feedback about the effectiveness of the program in developing first class players?

I think NT and PNG are out of the Redbacks league this season. So just the four local teams and it is a bit shorter.

Not sure about JLT. Last season all the Redbacks played the first weekend and then headed off. Depends on the dates I guess.

The Redbacks will take about 14 or so to the JLT tournament and there are 24 in their squad plus rookies, plus the emerging Redbacks and SA Under 19 squad. Still lots of decent players around. Grade cricket can't start that early so good that these players get some hits on turf in at good standard.

Redbacks have been going better the last few years, playing in a couple of Shield finals and a one day final. Not necessarily because of the Redbacks League but I doubt they'll be changing it based on results.

Oh come on .. so a few people having a hit before the season starts .. none of whom play first class cricket justifies having this funding used and weakening first grade cricket in this state which flies directly in the face of strengthening grade cricket in Australia. I see nothing happening in the last 12 months to be pleased about .. the performance of our batsman in Shield cricket has not been good enough. You keep telling people everything is fine .. finishing on the bottom of the shield ladder and continually having the Redbacks league funded in this way is ridiculous .. put the money into grade cricket .. improve the funding for all grade clubs and improve the standard. There should be improved funding to grade cricket .. the increased funding of first grade coaches and coaching standards should be a major priority .. the development officer jobs need to become part of each clubs funding and then they can work across the state to improve coaching for young cricketers in SA .. there is no reason why a grade club could not include them as part of a full time coaching role directly connected to the role as a first grade coach. Why does SA have to continue to paddle along with indecisive decision-making with little attention to detail .. 2 shield wins in 36 years and no shield in the last 22 years is not good enough and this sort of apathy about grade cricket development being perpetuated by the high performance department in this state is not good enough!! We have just lost a 17 year old to Victoria straight out of our high performance unit .. where is the work being done to build relationships that stop this sort of thing happening .. there is a reason why the Victorians had no interest in Pope or Zampa .. !!
