Best local bowler's you have seen/faced?

The best bowler I have faced without a doubt (in my opinion) was Brett Swain. Not the quickest by a long shot but could do anything with the ball.

The quickest I faced was Jonathon Brookes from West Torrens. The old nets at Kings Reserve were quite bouncy & facing a fired up Brooksey (as a result of coach Pyke constantly sledging him) was not my idea of fun. Honourable mentions to a guy named Afzaal Haider who used play at East Torrens, & a fired up Warren Mitchell from AHOS a couple of years ago (Shark Hunter will remember witnessing all of those!!)

Agreed! Brookesy was pretty bloody swift and didnt mind banging it in short.

Why does the name Trevor Bailey sound familiar? Was he in Churches or PDCA?? Or is my fading memory tricking me?

Played for Elizabeth in the late 80's when they were in ATCA then SACA. Very quick, they called him Stinger for a reason.

Trevor Bailey played a few games at Craigmore in the late 90s from memory, very sharp, ripped Willaston apart one day took 8/7.

I actually umpired in that game. Willaston were 1 for 17 and Bailey had 0/7. Darren "Muppett" Thomas sledged him about being pretty average just coming out of "A" Grade District cricket.
The rest is history. Willaston all out 17...Bailey 8/7. Bad call I thought Muppett.

Simon Byrne ( sp ) who played for West Adelaide ( footy ) years ago was fast, fast, fast. Off four or five steps and was scary.

Dave Burtenshaw.

My mail is he was extremely quick, could move the ball both ways and really made it talk.

Was at his peak through the 1970s.
I faced him a few times in the early 80s and you r right btp, very quick and moved the ball both ways off the pitch. Some of his bowling feats are legendary including taking all 10 wickets in an innings, ALL CLEANED BOWLED  in a final and strangely enough, Strathalbyn still lost.
Dominated country carnivals thru the 70s and early 80s.
1974 - 54 wickets
1977 - 47 wickets @ 5.68
1978 - 36 wickets @ 6.44
1980 - 55 wickets @ 5.12
1982 - 36 wickets @ 6.02
1985 - 39 wickets @ 5.79

quite remarkables stats those.

Was only discussing him on the weekend. The old man faced him a few times and said he was probably the one bowler that when he edged the ball to the keeper he was happy to walk ala Gilchrist, Scary fast and especially with no helmets in the day.

Also said that he killed a man whilst bowling. Not sure if it was true but he seemed pretty certain he did.

He ALMOST killed a batsman with a bouncer, heard that the fellow stopped breathing and turned blue before being revived on the pitch.
Apparently it shook Perry up as it would anyone and he rarely bowled bouncers from that point on, only to top class batsmen that had hung around too long. Thankfully he kept the ball pitched up to me at all times and i just copped a hammering on the thigh as i was silly enough not to wear a thigh pad back then and paid the penalty of hardly being able to walk the following days.
Perrys records speak for themself,1232 wkts in club games ,650 wkts at country carnivals,10 hat-tricks,6 or 7 tons with the bat,inc 4 tons in 5 inns with 34 runs off one 8-ball over,he also made 145no off only 14 overs in one game,Perry took 13 wkts in one GF inc 4/1 off one over, won 9 flags,a record 77 wkts at 6.17 in the 74-75 season, also 64 wkts in 71-72,for 20 yrs in a row Perry won Straths bowling agg,won 12 assoc bowling agg trophies, opened the assocc bowling for 20 yrs,6 teams of the year for country cricket,a committee member of Strath and the Assocc for 40 odd yrs and is a life member of both, can still be seen prepairing wickets at Strath. In 2007 Perry was named statewide winner of the XXXX Gold "Good as Gold" award for services to cricket. A very fast bowler in his time was Perry Jones and a great man also, would have to be the best country cricketer by far.

Glen Linke - Barossa & Light comp.
Smooth approach to the wicket and dangerously sharp.

check the time of the post.
by memory sandercock was a tall med/fast bowler. played against him in 89/90 and got me out both times we played against rostrevor. was a typical rostrevor kind of arrogant bowler especially to a 18yr old. anyway we knocked them off in the semi and went on to win the flag.

well shep was another story short skidder who didnt mind a word or two. i went in at tea feeling very comfortable having opened the bat. grange legend bazza fry gave me a tip that it gets harder at grange after tea, i think it was the 1st over after tea and shep skidded one into my pads mind you i think it hit outside the line, but hey grange got all the umpires decisions.

I believe Sandercock and Shepard have discussed your batting ability in the past at length and both come to a similar conclusion that your scalp did not really rate that high in their pecking order...

I agree with the comment about Brett Swain being the best I have seen. I had the pleasure of seeing Brett bowl many an over. I will never forget on my birthday one year. He jokingly (or at least I thought it was a joke) promised me a hatrick that morning and did actually deliver!. I know it was just a coincidence but it did make me smile.
The fastest I have ever seen was Rod McCurdy. We even had to move the slip cordon back a bit during the first over he bowled in A Grade Cricket at Thebarton when we dropped a couple.
Cheers
