What is going on at West Torrens? Hearing from a couple of different sources that the coach has been given his marching orders....

Wouldn't be surprised considering he has cost the club a couple of promising juniors who have moved on to Glenelg.

The kid in our case is captaining the Country Red team in Bank SA, they had a team get together at Strikers match last Tuesday, guess who was the only player not to go? You guessed it, the captain! He was down at Glenelg training getting presented with his new Cap and all the gear. Seeing he has not been cleared yet was a bit odd!

Swings and roundabouts that stuff. Players are always going to move seeking better opportunities. Glenelg might gain this country kid but they lost Damon Kerr.

The captain of Country Red has been given plenty of opportunities at WTDCC. Played A grade at 15. Has been promoted on potential in some cases and not performances. Hard to come back and displace another player when playing college cricket most of the time. Maybe there is a smell of petty jealousy and over zealous parenting. The appearance at GCC before he has been cleared and not with his country team mates wreaks of "I" first and team a poor last. Has crapped on WTDCC for all the time, effort and high level coaching they have given him. Shame! Shame! Shame!

If there is to be a merger between two clubs I feel the announcement would be made before the 29 Feb. meeting of the three clubs with SACA.
If there is a meeting with SACA on 29 Feb it most probably mean a merger has not been agreed to. If a merger was agreed to the Feb 29 meeting would not be required.

Latest story coming out of Woodville is West Torrens to absorb Port Adelaide.....

Think it's just Woodville playing with themselves to deflect attention away from their issues below First and Second Grade.

Seems odd that you'd hold playing 1st XI cricket against him. Strange attitude. The kids don't get a choice.

If he's going to a new club why wouldn't he go to that club's training when he's in Adelaide? Inconvenient timing sure, but you can't be in two places at once. Kids who are in and around state squads are ambitious about their cricket.

Would make sense geographically. West Torrens/Port gets the coast all the way from West Beach to North Haven. Woodville get the inner west - city to Findon, up to Pennington.

We have had a large number of State reps over the last five years in the junior squads, think all of them played College cricket ( except Bailey Capel currently). Think this shows we do support them and play them in the correct grade for their development. They are required to attend one session a week only, or at worse one a fortnight. Unfortunately, Joel never attended. Bit hard for the A Grade captain to select him when he has never faced him or seen him play. One of the parents issue was other kids being selected ahead of him, but these were all one day games, and Joel gets carted in that format, the other lad has variety and a great yorker, excellent death bowler, and was therefore rightfully picked ahead of Joel. He wants to go to Bays as his Scotch College coach is David Scholz who is involved there, and his Dad is Chairman I think.

Annoys me when I hear comments from other Clubs. Heard story from lad filling in for Port 3rd Grade vs Uni, sledging from Uni players why you are playing for Club that won't be around next year. When everyone knows Uni should be the team to go, but all political.

Woodville players when they played us were disgraceful ( including captain, wicky who gets everything because of his last name, and coach who sub fielded), like enjoy playing at St.Clair next year (meaning most of our players will be in 3rd Grade when we merge), plus other stuff can't be repeated here.

SACA determined to get to 10 clubs, even 8, so many clubs bragging how well they did to survive, should not get too far ahead of themselves as they probably only have a couple more years left also!

West Torrens didn't exactly bathe themselves with glory v Woodville either....heard the 2's captain gave a rather firey pre game talk to smash them off the park.

I hope SACA do get to 8 or 10 clubs as 12 clubs will make bugger all difference and it is ridiculous that the SACA have held a gun to the head of just 3 of the 13 clubs for the reason of location when in reality it is due to who and who isn't on the SACA board.

If there is to be a merger - a Woodville/West Torrens merger would make the strongest new club. There is already identity with the football club. The strengths and weaknesses of each of these clubs compliment each other and if the merger was to be fair and equal, the new club has potential to dominate the competition from the start from top to bottom. It would be wise to base the juniors and women at Henley, with seniors and club headquarters at Woodville.

I am not convinced adding Port to West Torrens would significantly improve West Torrens besides a short term cash injection. If West Torrens moved to Port, that would be even worse.

Woodville and Port would also make sense, but if I were Woodville, I'd want to add West Torrens rather than Port.

These clubs would be fine to survive on their own as well as any of the other13 clubs. It is not like the football situation where West Torrens had no money and both clubs were poor on field.

A shit and unjust situation. Not getting any coverage because no one cares about Grade cricket and SACA have been kissed on the dick by the AFL move to Adelaide Oval so everything is rosy with full stadiums and the Strikers going well.

Don't get me wrong - West Torrens do a lot right. A few pages back I said they were an example of how a grade club should be run.

That doesn't mean everything is perfect and also every club - whether run well or run poorly - is occasionally susceptible to a player moving on to what they perceive to be greener pastures.

There's a big difference between a kid who goes to St Michael's popping out to the odd West Torrens training to keep his hat in the ring and a country kid who boards at Scotch College on the other side of town and doesn't necessarily have access to transport.

If Joel isn't that good and you've got other prospects who are better than him, then that's great. Credit to your depth and development. But you shouldn't be disappointed Joel is moving on. You should be happy you have all these far superior, more committed (in your eyes) prospects.

A prominent politician flexing his muscle in merger talks? :o

Also hearing that a local council has a multi million dollar investment tied up in one of the grounds (picket fences, relaid square, double storey clubrooms) that would be flushed away if the club disappeared.

I respect what you are saying TC, you always make a lot of sense whenever you post on here, and I normally agree with everything you say. You seem to look at things very neutrally and fairly.

Our Club just took offence to the claim on the clearance request citing "lack of Opportunities". This was totally inaccurate, and after our Chairman Andy Capel spoke to Joel's Dad, he said that was Glenelg's words and they did not agree with that comment.

Sometimes you just need to make a stand, Joel is a required player, and we have put five years into developing him into an A Grade player, hoping over the next year or so he will continue to develop and start to perform at that level. Cant see him playing 1st grade at the Bays at the moment either.

If they still want to move to Glenelg next year, then we will clear him then.
