thats exactly right, after xmas is when the premiership contenders rise to the top and it becomes fairly apparent who will be around the mark come finals time! Sides in the past have started well then dropped off quite considerably as the year went on! Goolwa were a prime example last year, started really well before xmas winning there first 4 games i think, then found themselves losing a couple then before they knew it they were out of the race!

Also surely the encounter bay pitch cant be that bad, aren't southern districts playing sturt on there soon?? surely they would have to have an official curator or something...

I know I queried it in a post last week, but I don't know why everyone is so concerned about the E-Bay pitch. Remember folks, it is still only October! I'm no Don Burke, but would guess that unless you have Les Burdett and bucketloads of cash at your disposal, early season pitches are generally not going to be batsman's paradises (not sure if Don Burke is any good at pitches, but he is a bloody good horticulturist ... much like a few of the Aldinga boys!). Just have a look at some of the District scores in The Sunday Mail over the last few weeks. Not many big scores there, A grade sides getting rolled for under 100 and they are supposed to be the best cricketers and wickets in the state. Also, although I guess conditions can change a bit during 2 dayers, both sides are using the same deck so it is still an even playing field (so to speak). The batsmen who are patient and up for a fight will be the ones who prosper.

the turf on the weekend was green with lots of grass but was rock hard and had good pace about it. was probably 50-50 between batting and bowling. good pace in it for the batsmen and a bit of sideways in it for the bowlers. but certainly not the bowlers paradise like the scores suggested. southern will be playing on the same pitch we used so another week of cutting and rolling and i think it will be cherry ripe for batting.

do yourselves a favour and get down to the bay and watch southern v sturt. is a great day and weather to be amazing. also a chance of seeing S. TAIT line up for sturt which would be great to see again.

Cop that!!! But well said here Jimmy.......If i remember correctly in the Goolwa v Willunga game down there last season Bruce Elliot and McMillan took something like 8/30 odd between the two of them.........Lets hope the Goolwa boys don't choke again this coming weekend......They look like a bunch of muppets against the slow bowling!

As an interested observer from the square leg umpiring position on Saturday i did notice that Goolwa seem to have a number of captains on the field.....It was noticed on the team sheet that A.Evans was named the captain as such........But as it has been over the past 5 seasons it was K.Vincent ringing the changes and always getting in the young lads ear! How about Andy is just allowed to captain and run the side how he likes as it obviously hasn't performed under the former skipper! Will be interesting to see if Andy culls out the old blokes over the season and concentrates on youth......Its not like the older blokes are the stars of the side unlike in other teams....

Lets hope the magpies can live up too all there talk this weekend......Which i once again highly doubt.....Talented team that get dragged down all too often by muppets in there team!

Yeah I'm not sure why everyone is always having a go at Goolwa.

I like their attitude of playing young and old players. Maybe there is a few too many old fellas, but the young blokes are still getting a decent crack.

Dont think we have underacheived at all most of our side over the past 3 seasons since our last Grandfinal has been ok considering we had a side of guys straight out of colts after we went back on our own from the merge with Port Elliot, like i said never finished bottom first year missed on finals by half a game ,2nd year was buy 2 wickets /runs<bonus points> and last year won first 6 in a row and fell in a heap after Xmass and missed out by a game of finals again,so thats not to bad .Hopefully we can get there this year :ympray: :ympray: :ympray:

Out of 12 blokes named 50% 22 and under and 50% 30+. Are there guys at the club between 23 and 30 Rocky? I don't know Goolwa CC very well so just curious I suppose! I guess if you keep those young guys together and keep bringing colts in each year you should be looking good in a few years. i guess when guys hit that 25-30 bracket, marriage, kids work commitments etc start taking more of a priority.

What about the other clubs in the comp? Reckon there might be a couple of clubs with similarly young sides. McLarens springs to mind, apart from Ifould there wouldn't be anyone over 25-26 there? A few teenagers too. I guess its every clubs challenge to keep the young blokes playing with the lure of the beach, beers and babes during summertime!

At Willunga we are mostly fairly young, with the exception of Peek, Elliot, Minot, McAuley all being 35+ the rest of the side is all under 25! A Williamson 21, T Williamson 18, Harding 21, McMillian 22, Franceshini 17 & young Thomas who top scored for us on the weekend with 42 is also 17!
