I think 38C is a reasonable temp to cancel sport. Remember most associations use forecasts to make this decision, so although the forecasted temp is 38C doesnt mean it wont get to 40+C or even under the forecasted temp. They also do not take relative humidity into consideration which is also another variable that has a direct effect on the human body's ability to maintain temp.

Our club has had an elder player killed on the cricket field on a warm day, so my opinion takes this into consideration.

Yes which i new about, thats y i didnt post anything strong. Just my opinon that the heat rule is a farse in the church comp. Surely when you play in heat you do as much as you can to stay hydrated and common sense comes into it.

With climate change increasing seasonal temps, heat policies are here to stay and is something i think we need.

Perhaps they should cancel work and walking to and from the pub if it gets too hot

100% agreed, crickey, we'd have never played cricket in Alice Springs if you followed a 38 deg rule....

Much rather play in 41 deg Adelaide heat than 34 degree 80 humidity heat of Darwin....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

offf track here, but this "climate change" seems like rubbish- we haven't had temperatures like this in Adelaide since late 1800's/early 1900's. This suggests to me that it's swings & roundabouts- or was it "Global Warming" back then too?

Adelaide & Surburban it is 40 degrees, used to be 42. 2 years ago we played and it got to 44 on the day, by agreement with the captains we took drinks every 10 overs and nobody complained about dehydration. Even had someone bowl 17 overs straight, and he's not young.

I honestly think that if the two captains agree on more drinks breaks and you manage yourself proplely the heat isnt a problem. Keep your fluids up. Have always thought that if you are thinking and complaining of the heat then you are not concertrating on the game

We play consecutive saturdays, so if you play a 1 dayer on the first week due to heat, what would u do on the 2nd week? Is it any different from current situation where play is cancelled on the first week and a one dayer played on the 2nd saturday?

They already do.

You need to go do some research on global warming. The point was average seasonal temps are increasing therefore extreme hot days will be more and more frequent. We need to have contingency plans in place to accommodate for this.

We made 204 off 61 overs and have Glenelg ANA 3/13 off 12 overs we were lucky to bowl those overs at the end of the day as they were all stuffed after fielding in the heat. One of their blokes had to go to hospital because of severe cramping poor bugger couldn't move without something cramping.

So how did that guy prepare for the game? Was he out on the drink the night before? did he keep his fluids up during the game? did he eat right? come on mate dont try tell me 38 is to hot. If we play a one dayer on a sat then its a new game the following week. One dayers are one dayers! you no 40 overs each!!!

It was only forecast to be 38C, on the way to our game the current temp was 39C. Im not qualified and wont tell you 38C is too hot to play cricket, the ppl that did the science and other experts are and that is what they are telling you.

How you prepare the night before or how much fluid u take in are only small factors in the equation, you can do all the right things in terms of preperation, fluid intake etc and still sucumb to the effect of the heat. You should check out the link i posted above for more info.

Remember the competition you play in and what it is there for. We are not conditioned athletes, we are just average guys wanting to play some cricket.
In my opinion it is more dangerous to play during a hot day than it is to play when it's pissing with rain.

You can't reschedule following games for the remainder of the season because you play a one day match on the first week of a 2 day game, think about it.

Just to let you know Dutchy it wasn't Galliford that had severe cramping it was one of their bowlers Lourens i think but Gally was pissed enough to drop me. Thanks to him for that.
It was hot and i can see your points Gowser about we are not conditioned athletes(i am certainly in that basket) but i think the difference between 35 and 38,39 etc is minimal it's hot and you need to look after yourself otherwise your body will struggle to get you through the day. I think a bit of commonsense with shorter periods between drinks breaks is sufficient so we can play our summer sport in summer.

well with the summers getting longer and hotter I can see in a couple of years no minor cricket being played, have to move the pitches into the front bars of the local watering hole (mmm not a bad idea)

common sense is all that is needed, last weekend I arranged with the other Skipper to have all fielders have their drinks in the coaches box at the side of the ground and we have a 2 min break every 10 overs....I also made every bowlers longest spell to be 4 overs...
