The thing about grade juniors is there are only going to be 4-5 make the jump into seniors each year. If clubs are running 2 x U14 and 2 x U16 teams, there would need to be roughly 60 (or more) players to fill those squads.

So you've got 15 x (15yo / 14yo / 13yo / 12yo) spread across your Under 14's and Under 16's. Only 4-5 are going to make the jump to seniors each year on average, because there are only 44 spots to fill each week. So most junior players are eventually going to be lost to grade cricket. It can't be any other way.

Is the role of grade juniors to give all 60 kids a good opportunity to develop their cricket? Or is it about trimming the 60 down, identifying those most likely to play higher and giving them the most opportunities to develop?

"At that age level its about encouraging all kids to play and enjoy the game. Not let 2 players dominate week after week. Soon they will find themselves with kids losing interest as they arent getting a fair go! The kids arent playing for sheep station FFS!"

No it's not. That is the role of community cricket to provide a level for those who love the game but won't go on at district level.

Where do you get that figure from? Hobart has 8 teams in its Grade Competition and majority of the First Class players play their club cricket in Hobart.

I understand your thought process, TTGDCC only has 48 kids spread across 4 sides. We have 2 squads 14s and 16s both with having roughly 24 kids in each, of which some dont train due to living in the country areas.

With a good coaching structure there is plenty of time, effort, expertise and opportunity for all 48 players to improve and develop. This is why the whites grade is important as it allows 1st year players in the age group to continue to develop both in cricket and physically. I have seen plenty of the kids considered ‘more talented’ be over taken by a kid who has developed in the space of half a season.

As you rightly said each season only 4-5 kids out of maybe 10-13 kids make the transition into seniors and the rest don’t make it, however where have those 4-5 kids come from? Are they from the kids considered ‘more talented’ or the group of kids who ended up taking the ‘more talented’ kids spot in the reds half way through the year?

I’ve said it before, the junior system isn’t broken. It’s improving, so is the standard across the board IMO

Good to see a few new teams up and about. Not the same old top four Sturt, Woodville, West Torrens, Kensington - feels like it's been those four teams forever.

East Torrens flying, Jets on top and I reckon the Gullies will get on a roll from here.

East Torrens are the surprise packet. Northerns have a good spread of players contributing, gullies are always competitive. Glenelg are well placed, but have the dreaded bye in the last round. All the sides mentioned above have batting paradises.
Woodville still around the mark and always come good after xmas, but wouldn't want Teijens to break down, West Torrens should be undefeated, got a game they won taken off of them, aren't playing great cricket but are still winning on the back of their bowling performances.
Uni have benefited massivly from Cooper being available,
Kensington have been very dissapointing and have a very good side, but are always dangerous, and Prospect have fallen away, after a promosong season last year.
The final 2 spots come finals time will come down to % I feel.

Don't think all of those four have been up there for quite as long as you might think. WT finished 7th in 2010/11 and 9th in 2008/09. Kensi finished 9th in 09/10. Northerns haven't been out of the top 4 for long, only the last 2 seasons after finishing 1st in 08/09 and 3rd in 09/10.

Mind you ET are certainly a side on the rise after not finishing above 10th in the last 4-5 years. Prospect have been the most disappointing, I really thought they looked like they were going to turn it around based on their season last year. Gullies also have a very good young side that will get stronger until the Premier League has their best young players unavailable for much of the season. This PL will really test the depth of each club.
