Sturt this week becomes the 27th time a team is 2nd on the ladder with a percentage of less than 50%

It last happened in Round 21 1992 - Eagles had a win loss record of 12 wins 7 losses, with a % of 49.43%

Here is a table of the occurances when it happened:

1914 must have been a close comp, with both North and Sturt in that list.

Apart from Port it was. They went through undefeated that year and every other club finished with less than 50%

Thanks for those stats Spelly. This question may sound a little ridiculous, but has there ever been a team on top that has a percentage of less than 50. Or, what is the lowest percentage ever by a team on top of the ladder?

The most astonishing is Port in 1928. The losing margin in their 1 loss was 48 pts more than the total winning margin of their 5 wins. Spelly, what was their winning and losing margins in the 6 matches??

Round 1 they beat Glenelg by 7 - 13.13 to 12.12
Round 2 they beat Norwood by 6 - 10.6 to 8.12
Round 3 they beat Torrens by 4 - 10.17 to 10.13
Round 4 they beat South by 24 - 14.19 to 12.7
Round 5 they beat North by 3 - 13.12 to 12.15
Round 6 they lost to West by 92 - 7.23 to 25.7

The quarter by quarter scores for that Round 6 match were:
West 7.3 13.6 19.6 25.7 (157)

Bad kicking is bad footy. Only 2 scoring shots less than Westies but 92 points less. Great crowd too.

spell_check, your work is astounding.

I have a question. Has there ever been a time when you couldn't answer a question regarding SANFL stats

I'd have to back you up there Elephant. 24,000+ for a round 7 match between Port and West? The supporter bases in the SANFL must have moved dramatically in the years following that 1928 game. Then again 80% of that crowd could have been Port supporters?

The 1979 Central Districts percentage is interesting: Round 17, top of the ladder and 50.50%! Earlier in the season in round 9 South were top with 50.53%. I remember that 1979 was also the year of the highest amount of wins ever recorded by the bottom side, which was West, I think they had about 6 or 7 wins for the year. 2nd to last Sturt, were still within striking range of the 5 with about 2 rounds left to play. It was also Woodville's first year in the finals. A lot of stats were put under pressure and eventually snapped in that most evenly contested 1979 season.

spell-check - I feel its not quite right to say that Sturt is second with a percentage less than 50 percent as we are not comparing "apples with apples". The Roosters and Eagles have only played 7 games while the Blues have played 8 games, if either the Roosters or Eagles win their eighth game it would destroy this claim.....is this not a fair assumption.

Enjoy your work spell-check, keep it up.

But for all intents and purposes, Sturt are second on the ladder - that is a fact.
Otherwise yntil the finals start - you can't make ANY stats about who is where!

I usually look at games lost to give the inverse table but maybe a better solution would be to have % games won - ie games won/games played where a draw is a 0.5 win.

The AFL had this in the early 90s - the Match Ratio System.

Dissident is right, however, Sturt is 2nd at the moment, but being 2nd on the ladder come finals time is more important than being 2nd now.

And I appreciate your appreciation guys, thanks. 8) There are some times however I can't answer them, but I do the best I can.

More importantly, how many times has that second team gone on to win the flag that year?

In a final 5, 9 times.

1st has won 17 times
3rd - 5 times
4th - once
5th - once

If I am understanding the above correctly this means that the team that finished second has won 9 times in the GF, but combining that with your table of clubs in second and % less than 50% - none of them on that list went on and won the flag (since the final 5 has been in). Sturt will have to make history to win this year (and this week :) ).

The two clubs in there to win the flag that year was Port in 1928 and Torrens in 1933.

And ferret, I'm not old enough to own a duffle coat. If I had one it would be 2nd generation. ;)

I love a good omen, so it is worth noting that Sturt went on to win the flag, against the reigning premier in 1915; the year following our mid-year 2nd placing with a percentage below 50. Another possible connection with that past scenario is that the first side, Port, went through undefeated, just as Centrals are threatening to do this year.
Could we see a repeat of those fortunes this year and next?
