Apparently Sturt and West only had 22 hit outs between them - 11 each. 22 is a League lowest record for a match.

Does that mean there were very few ball ups and throw ins, or that the ruckmen were grabbing the pill or missing it altogether at the restarts?

But they kicked 31 goals so there's at least 31 centre bounces?

Lots of fresh-air swishes or a problem with the stats?

Are these Advertiser stats?

Lots of bad bounces that hit the turf?

Is the centre circle at unley on the cricket pitch square? if so a bloody cricket ball struggles to get above shin height sometimes so how do you expect a football to be bounced correctly

Those stats could well be very accurate. To be counted as a hitout, the tap needs to be effective and benefit that ruckman's team. In the 2005 GF, almost all of the hitouts gained by the Eagles ruckmen should not have been counted as they were swallowed up by the Central running fleet.

My opinion of a hit out is different - it should be who won the ruck duel. Where it went is what the stat 'Clearances' are for or effective/ineffective hit outs.

I'd take the club stats as accurate anyday.

Those are called "hit outs to advantage". A hit out simply is that - a hit out. Where it goes next is irrelevant. Though, this is all up to interpretation on who counts the statistics. Roughly one in every four hit outs at AFL level goes to advantage.

And since the OP is quoting Advertiser stats, triple them and then you probably have a more accurate figure.

Those that aren't can do as they please.

Agreed, what a joke. There was atleast 7 times that they recalled it and a couple where they couldnt be bothered. I wonder if the umpires do any of their training at the oval they will be umpiring at in the week leading up to the game.

Sorry Sturt1, but why would the umps need to train to bounce the ball? Surely they should be clever enough to judge the type of surface and decide whether to throw or bounce.. even my mother can bounce a ball

Yeah, this is the definition the Advertiser stats people say they use. But the problem is that it is far too open to interpretation, and with different people taking the stats at different grounds, it makes comparing hitout stats between teams/games basically meaningless. If you want to measure how effective teams are at stoppages you need to measure clearances. You need to keep the human element out of stats-recording as much as possible, and the only way to do this with hitouts is to record all hitouts.

Yet another example of how the Advertiser stats are letting the SANFL Statistics community (i.e. Spelly ) down.

From memory the ball was kept in play most of the day and I cant remember to many ball ups around the ground - the quaters didnt seem to go that long really.

There were a few recalls - I rekon one umpire had real trouble with it and then hit the ground whilst running backwards @ one stage to every ones delight .

Some statsmen must count them different ways, guess they dont count them the same as the days where Frank Spiel would get 700 hit outs in a season!!
