SANFL TEAM OF THE 80's

Postby GWW » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:31 am

I noticed on the cricket section there was discussion on an Aussie cricket side of the 1980's. That got me thinking about an SANFL team of the 1980's:

FF Davies Evans Naley

HF McGuinness Kernahan A Jarman

C Bradley Ebert Aish

HB Motley Phillips Abernethy

FB Whittlesea Leslie Lee

1st Ruck

Carey
McIntosh
Platten

Interchange from: Cornes, Paynter, Anderson, Redden

The positions i had the biggest problems were Full Forward and in particular Full Back. I couldnt think of a specialist full back who stood out so went for Martin Leslie. I would have liked to have put Redden in the 18 but went for Carey and Davies due to their better goalscoring abilities. No doubt i've left out a few players who should have been included, but its not an easy task. What do others reckon?

Good pick at FF there GWW

I would have named Roger "Batman" Delaney at full back myself or even a Richard Champion..

If you had a six interchange bench, I'd also be keen to see a G. Fielke and a D.Hart in there as well...

FF N Roberts (WT/N) J Roberts (WT/W/NA) D Hart( CD/NA)

HF T McGuinness (G) S Kernahan (G) D Jarman (NA)

C C Bradley (PA) A Jarman (NA) G Anderson (PA)

HB P Motley (S) G Phillips (PA) B Abernethy (PA)

FB G Whittlesea (S) R Delaney (PA) M Taylor (N)

1st Ruck

Redden (NA)
McIntosh (N)
Platten (CD)

Interchange from: M Aish (N) P Carey (G)

Coach: M Nunan (NA)

There are some big omissions from my team- R Ebert, R Davies, G Cornes, as I felt they are "70's" era. I could've included T Evans instead of J Roberts, but I felt that Roberts was a very good FFWD in poor performing sides (W & WT), whereas Evans was getting it lace out continually. Nunan gets the nod as coach, as he "rebuilt" a club, and turned NA into a power side of the 80's (& I hate Cornes). There are that many left out, that could've been included, but the reserve 20 would be a very strong unit (nb I only had 2 on the interchange, as that was the rule in the 80's)

Tough team to pick so well done on your efforts lads ... I think with anything like this you need to set some sort of criteria ... For example I wouldn't select Michael Taylor for the team, who no doubt was a sensational footballer (and a personal fave of mine),purely because he only played about 3 seasons of SANFL in the 80's ...

Similar thing with Delaney, who imho had developed into a very good player by the late 80's but perhaps hadn't been at the level long enough to hold down the position for the decade??

From the Legs, I would suggest Aishy & Macca are pobably the only certaintities, with Rocky, Gags, R. Maynard and possibly Keith Thomas the only other possibilities ...

Jack would have to be the coach of this team imo

You cant have a Delaney without a Fiacchi...
Throw Mr Cool in the back lines there as well...

If you're excluding players CP on the basis of how long they spent in the SANFL, then you would also need to exclude your Kernahans, Bradleys and anyone else that ventured over the border...

I guess technically your team of 20 should be your medallists and runners up for each year of the 80's...

Interesting to note that the side is mainly Glenelg, North Adelaide, Norwood & Port Adelaide. Throw in a few from Sturt, West Torrens, Centrals & Woodville, leaves West Adelaide & South Adelaide without representation.

Falcon Chick, your idea wouldn't work, as you can't have a team of 20 midfielders!

Got me there....

I did suggest Grant Fielke as West's contribution, and GWW had Mark Naley, with Platten representing Centrals.

Not excluding players on that basis alone FC, the case in point was Michael Taylor who was a star SANFL player in the 70's, but wouldn't have produced enough in the Decade in question to warrant a place ahead of others imo ... Bradley, Kernahan, Platten, McGuiness, Motley etc still did enough in the SANFL, in the 80's to make the team I believe ...

One of those caught between eras things.

Having said that his footy from 80-82 would probably warrant selection - wasn't too shabby in '83 either.

In the end, I went for those who made their name in the SANFL during the 80s.
