Note the colour of NAFC shorts. Black it appears. Horrid!

I think this is the first time I have seen B&W photos of North
wearing black shorts.
Thanks Dasher! =D>
And if Spellys out there, would you be able to shed light on the SANFL's home/black,away/white shorts policy.
I have noticed that in some games, up until the late '50s, both teams wore black shorts.
I noticed this while looking up finals scores in Advertiser during this time.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Well, I think that the home and away shorts policy was around in the 70s' but I'm not sure how further back it goes.

I have followed SANFL, Centrals in particular since 1964. As I remember it there wasn't a set home & away, black shorts white shorts policy in my time following Football.

I'm pretty sure that each team had a preferred shorts colour and would change to the opposite when playing other teams with the same choice. I believe the preferences were

Central District White
Glenelg Black
North Adelaide White
Norwood Black (later Navy, before coloured shorts were introduced in 1975)
Port Adelaide Black
South Adelaide White (not 100% sure on this one)
Sturt Black
West Adelaide Black
West Torrens White
Woodville Black

As you can see from this list it was far better to choose white shorts as you only needed to change a couple of times per season. I remember that Centrals didn't look that good in black shorts and I much preferred them wearing white shorts. It was only away games against North, Torrens and South that they needed to wear them.

Naturally with the introduction of Colour Television in 1975 this custom was discontinued. I think teams chose another colour when there was a clash with some wearing white, but I remember Glenelg in gold, West in Red & Torrens in yellow.

Strangely my records don't show Centrals wearing red shorts until 1988 so maybe they didn't change when there was a clash before this. In 1993 Centrals adopted white shorts as their alternates and since round 21, 1994 have made white their first choice.

Simple really no need to change shorts as we always wear white. A fact that eluded Port Adelaide in one finals game as they wore white until half time. Deliberate?
Also, Sturt turned up to Elizabeth with white shorts one year (an oversight they had corrected by the start of the League game.)

as far as i can remember home sides wore black & the away sides wore white, my memory of this goes back to the late 60's & the color tv bit is also right but the gold shorts we had looked ordinary as did westies red (essendons red was worse)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Ostensibly that was correct, but if Norwood played North Adelaide, Norwood always wore the darker shorts and North wore white, no matter whose home game it was.

You are on the right track. In the 1960s six teams had white shorts as there home shorts :

North
South
West
Torrens
Woodville
Central

The rest wore black as their home shorts. The ridiculous situation was that when North played West at Richmond North wore black. Thus both teams had combinations of red, black and white. Even in the 1968 first semi, West won the toss for shorts and wore white. It was ludicrous. West changed to black in the early 1970s, at about the same time as Woodville.

BAh, come talk to me when you keep a side to 1 goal 6 points in a GF like we did to Port in 1905.
To this day I still can't believe Port supporters got excited about being 2nd best and keeping North to 1 goal 8 points in a GF.
I can only assume they have less in their lives to get excited about than regular people?
