The South Adelaide Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Mick Rivers.

Originally from Broken Hill, Mick played 77 games for the Panthers debuting in 1963 (Player no. 1096) and kicking 29.34.

Which was a remarkable achievement after a footbridge fell on him in 1962 and he was told to never play sport again.

However, Mick won the Brown’s Cup in 1963 for the Reserves Best & Fairest and was a reserve for the 1964 South Premiership.

In an interview in 2016, Mick recalled how disappointed he was to be runner-up to Peter Darley in the 1967 Knuckey Cup.

“In retrospect Peter Darley should have realised he’d go on to win another six or seven. I’d had a great year and made him look good as I ruck- roved to him. That year ’67 he beat me by one vote. He could have at least let me have one!! But I forgive him!”

Mick’s last game was in round 2 of 1968 as injuries took their toll limiting his pre-season that year.
