This might be a silly question

But why is the SANFL the SANFL and not the SAFL or SAFA etc etc?

There must be a historical reason at some point. What is a marketing ploy for a national competition at some point?

Because its national football thats played, distinguishes from UK football and UK Rugby/League who have also used the term football.

ok, so it was supposed to signify Australian Rules football

Wikipedia says they changed it to that in 1927 though, before that it was SAFA, so wonder why they seem to be the only comp that i can think of that did it?

Cheers

The WAFL were the WANFL for almost 50 years too. The body that used to control football in Australia was the NFL till the VFL/AFL took over.
Tasmania were similar and were the TANFL. Qld were the QANFL too.

Thought it was 1907 the name was changed from the SAFA?

Wasn't the national body the NAFC or AFC?

No, North Adelaide and the Crows weren't that powerful even though the Crows would like to think they are. ;)

It was the Australian National Football Council when it closed up shop in 1995.

It had several names, Australian Football Council, National Football League and finally the above Australian National Football Council.

The SANFL was The South Australian Football Association, then became the South Australian Football League and they added "National" in 1927.
