I've posted in here first for views and then move it into history in the next couple of days,
I'm not sure how I feel about this to be honest, I'd be interested to know the basis for selection.
F: J. Platten K. Farmer M.Blight
HF: B. Hank B, Robran L.Head
C: J.Cahill R. Ebert K. Eustice
HB: P.Motley D.Moriarty W.Scott
B: M.Taylor I. McKay L.Fitzgerald
Ruck: T. Leahy N. Kerley B.Quinn
Int: P. Carey, P. Bagshaw, T.McKenzie, S.Kernahan
Captain: N. Kerley
Coach: J. Oatey

Let me start controversially by saying that Peter Motley shouldn't be in that team. Played something like 3 years at league level before going to Carlton.
How is there no McIntosh in this team is beyond me.
Fos did far more as a coach for both the Magpies and at State level than Oatey did.

Michael Taylor was a very good footballer, but Im not sure he belongs as a back pocket in this side. Possibly as an interchange/Reserve.
I would have Kerley out as ruck rover (I note he was a traditional ruck-rover type) and probably have him in a back pocket.
I would have Blight as CHF, Robran as ruck rover, Bagshaw forward pocket.
I wouldnt personally have McIntosh in the side, but Id be tempted to somehow have Aish in the forward line or on the bench.

Kerley out and Bagshaw in as Ruck Rover
Carey out and Davies in. Absolute BS he's not in. He could play in ruck or up forward if you lost Farmer or Blight. He can win the game for you 10x more than Carey would
Kernahan out & Macca in. More Glenelg bull$hit
Ebert as captain
Maybe Deane for Eustice
Cornes out as selector

Fos did far more as a coach for both the Magpies and at State level than Oatey did.
Motley played 92 games for Sturt over 4 seasons. Debuted in 1982 at age 17.
6 state games, first at age 18
Best on ground for SA vs Vic 1985.
All Australian 1985. Toured Ireland in the hybrid series.
More than the records show however is the fluidity of how he played. He was an exceptionally gifted footballer.
Fos did far more for the Magpies...? So how did Oatey end up with 10 flags and Fos nine? Your argument about Motley is debatable, but Fos doesn't hold a candle to Jack for how he revolutionised the game.

True, and I think Oatey deserves his spot as coach on that basis.
Not far behind as coach IMHO is Kerley. Oatey may have revolutionised the game, but Kerley had a consistent knack of revolutionising clubs that were poor on field performers and turned them into winners in very short spaces of time - we all know the story of South in 1964, Glenelg (who should've won more flags and became a powerhouse), West, and Centrals (whilst not jagging a flag, they went from easybeats under Cowboy Neale into a tough side to beat from 1988). It's arguable harder to walk into a club with a 'social' culture and turn it around than to keep a star-studded side who knows how to win at the top.

Kernahan out. Davies in. That's about it for me.

These sides are always hard to pick so many eras so many great plays
Sorry Carey has to be in played CHF and rucked for 18 years at Senior level
Kicked six goals in the 73 GF playing the hardest position, then moved into Ruck, was All Australian Ruckman twice
Think you find there was another selector who pushed hard for Kernahan (rates him as the best player he's seen) and it isn't Cornes.
Ross Gibbs for M Taylor and the sides perfect ...

Only 5 premierships behind George Fiacchi.

The perfect side would be the Glenelg team of the century
A gobsmacking 4 premierships says everything
Hang on; the Crows used that logic in the early days
Davies in.

Oatey no argument as coach he changed the way the game is played not just had an outstanding record. Williams not far behind then Kerley.
The forward line no argument against any of them. The centre line not so sure but how do you compare players over 100 years? There has to be a bias against anyone pre WW2.

Mind you, Davies got 42 touches and took 15 marks in the 76 grand final. Arguably best afield in the 1974 decider as well.
Davies in for me too.

How many games did Kernahan play for Glenelg?

I watched the 1st quarter of the 74 on the weekend when this team came out.
Davies was doing Eddy Betts before Eddy was born
I'm not belittling Carey but this team was meant to be picking your best team for a day and playing 448 games doesn't mean a great deal
Admittedly, Davies only got All Australian once, BUT, he was Captain of the team that included Carey
Again, doesn't really mean a lot
For me; Davies could come on and dominate a game for you.

Anyone of Oatey, Williams or Cahill could have been the coach. Jack Cahill, on the wing and could conceivably be coach, an amazing career.
On point 2, I agree, how any of the selection panel could confidently have anyone pre-WW2 ahead of anyone they have witnessed play is a little confusing.

Like Norm Smith over the boarder coach Jack Oatey was a legend and no one gets close to him in SA for me.
