Old Rivalries

I have read that West and Port once had a massive rivalry.
Norwood and Port were neck and neck for premierships through the 60's to the early 80's.

I want to point out a quirky stat concerning Sturt and North.
Beginning in 1969, these two sides have always been within at least one premiership of the other. Like two tennis players playing a very long game that has gone into deuce, the side that is trailing by one flag, will win exactly two, before the other wins its next.

1968: Sturt 8 flags, North 9 flags.
Sturt won the 1969 and 1970 premierships to go to 10 flags to North's 9, and surpassing them in total premierships for the first time in the history of the two clubs.
North won the 1971 and 1972 premierships. Sturt 10 to North 11.
Sturt won the 1974 and 1976 premierships. Sturt 12 to North 11.
North won the 1987 and 1991 premierships. Sturt 12 to North 13.
Sturt won the 2002 and 2016 premierships. Sturt 14 to North 13.

Don't know if that means much to anyone else out there, but it is nice to be ahead of North again, and the second most successful current club in the SANFL.

Nice?
It means you'll be waiting a hundred years for your next one if you need North to win two first.

I have to question that comment. Port won flags in 1962, 1963, 1965, 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1981 - a total of 7 flags in that time.
If you consider 1984 still early '80s Norwood won flags in 1975, 1978, 1982 and 1984 - a total of 4 flags in the period you quote.

7 flags to 4 is hardly neck and neck through the 60s to early 80s.

If you had said your club and Port being neck and neck in that period you would have been closer to the truth.

Sorry, I shoud have clarified, TOTAL premierships. I Norwood had 25 flags by 1984, Port had 26. Norwood started the 60's with 21 flags and Port with 19, meaning that Port passed Norwood's total in 1965. Norwood equalled in 1975, etc.

My memory as a youth Port always got beaten by sturt.

John Cahill had 3 to beat.

Who could forget Balme v Evans days

Lets not forget Peter Carey.

I find that Norwood v Port stat interesting in that Port were regarded as head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. Yet during my lifetime, Norwood had an equally successful history for about a decade.

Bar the 00's most of us would struggle to remember a time that Port were not having a successful period. The biggest lean period in most people's memory would be the gap from '65 - '77.

7 in the 50's
3 in the 60's
2 in the 70's
4 in the 80's
7 in the 90's

The 10's have been pretty crap for you as well. Don't forget that.

Old Rivalries.

Balme and Evans.

Fantastic as a supporter of any club.

Maybe not for these guys.

For those that are old enough to remember,

Granger and the rest.

Done what he was told to do.

'The rest'? What, you mean there are more David Grangers out there at large?

Look out, everyone! Hopefully John Cahill doesn't tell them all to king hit Graham Cornes again.

Well, Cornes hit him first, actually.
I doubt he would have done that had there been more than one of him actually.
I think we can safely say that Granger was not a plural.

The other thing with Port on top of the premierships, was the amount of times they lost a GF too .. Many years ago, if I remember correctly there was a stat showing Port played in a GF (or finished top 3, can't quite remember now) in every 3rd year, either for their entire existence or since early 1900's.

Whilst Norwood have been up there at times, it's worth remembering we won several of our flags before the introduction of GF's, not sure about Port.

Nice to have put this trend to bed.
Sturt, now for the first time in history, have gone 2 flags ahead of the Roosters.

And the way things are at Prospect, North will never get back in front of Sturt in any of our lifetimes.

I think the stat is a little bit more astounding than that JK.
They have made the top two about every second year.
73 top two finishes over the history of the SANFL.
Norwood and North (the next on the list of top two finishes) combined have finished top two 79 times.
