Eagles defeated the league leaders North by 58 points. The previous round South defeated the league leaders Eagles by 66 points.

This is the first time since Rounds 7 and 8 1980 when the top side two weeks in a row has lost by 50 points or more.

In Round 7 1980, Port beat top placed Glenelg by 51 points. The following round they beat top placed West Torrens by 90 points to head the ladder themselves.

Others to have come close

In 1993 Port lost by 75 points to Norwood in Round 14. They had the bye but still retained top spot. They then lost to Glenelg by 84 points in Round 16.

In 1991 North beat top placed Glenelg by 74 points in Round 5. Then two rounds later they beat top placed Eagles by 131 points, to claim 1st place.

In 1977 top placed Central District lost to West Adelaide by 78 points in Round 2. In Round 4 1st placed South lost to Glenelg by 67 points.

In 1941 top placed Sturt lost to last place South Adelaide by 58 points in Round 9. Two rounds later they defeated top placed West by 62 points to reclaim top spot.

In 1934 West Torrens lost the top spot to Port when they lost by 71 points to Port in the last Round (17). Torrens in Round 1 the following year were in 1st place, only to lose it again against Port, losing by 54 points.

It also happened in 1971 when in Round 19 top placed North lost to Port by 50 points. Port took top spot, but lost to Sturt by 56 points the next round.

Good work Spelly. That's a stat that even "Stan the Statistician from Stradbroke Island" would be proud of!

(If you haven't heard of him, Stan is a character from the Coodabeen Champions who has been my hero for many years. :) )

I was thinking about this up until now, I thought it would have been quite rare, and that's what I've come up with from 1930 onwards.

The impressive thing with this stat is that it is late in the season - early in the season you expect some rollercoaster action - so it just goes to show how competitive the SANFL is.

The 1993 Port stat is also pretty freaky.

Something else stranged also happened in the Reserves. Central lost two weeks in a row to the bottom side (Sturt were bottom and defeated Central and then the following week, Port did the same). The Eagles may have also been bottom when they beat Central two weeks before that.
