Only two Grand Finals since 1931 have been decided by less than three points - the 1958 Grand Final when Port won over West by two - 14.10 to 14.8 and the 1978 Grand Final - Norwood 16.15 to Sturt 14.26.

There have also been a further four Grand Finals decided by three points, the 1936, 1954, 1962 and 1965 Grand Finals. Making this year the closest Grand Final since 1978.

Another fact about the Grand Final was that it was the second latest finish to a season. The 1933 Grand Final was played on the 14th of October, one week later than scheduled due to the 1st Semi Final Replay.

Spelly, when was the last time we had Grand Finals decided by no more than a goal in consecutive years?

Never - it's a first. 1998 and 1999 had margins of 9 and 8 points; the last time the collective margins of consecutive GFs totalled 9 points or less was 1977-78. 8 and 1 points respectively. In fact, 9 points is the record for two consecutive Grand Finals.

When you think about it the SANFL went through what the AFL had for Grand Finals between 1990 and 2001.

The previous ten Grand Finals averaged 51.6 points for a margin. Lowest being 22.
In the AFL between 1990 and 2001 - 45.3 average, with 26 points being the lowest.

Hey Spelly without wanting to start a new thread can you quickly list the last 20 years premiers and runners up?

Cheers

Dutchy,
Since 1991, with some rough margins and a couple unsure exactly about.

2010 Centrals def Norwood 6 points
2009 Centrals def Sturt 7-8 goals(?)
2008 Centrals def Glenelg 42 points
2007 Centrals def North approx 70 points
2006 Eagles def Centrals approx 75 points
2005 Centrals def Eagles 5-6 goals
2004 Centrals def Eagles 125 points
2003 Centrals def West approx 5 goals
2002 Sturt def Centrals 7-8 goals
2001 Centrals def Eagles approx 7 goals
2000 Centrals def Eagles 22 points
1999 Port def Norwood 8 points
1998 Port def Sturt 9 points
1997 Norwood def Port approx 70 points (?)
1996 Port def Centrals 6 goals
1995 Port def Centrals 7-8 goals (?)
1994 Port def Eagles 6 goals
1993 Eagles def Norwood approx 70 points
1992 Port def Glenelg 10 goals
1991 North def West 75 points.

Know it has been discussed on here before, but either Port or Centrals have been in every one of the past 18 GF's, and there have only been two GF's since 1987 that haven't involved one of these. Only one GF since 1983 that hasn't involved either Port, North or Centrals.

Thanks FH, so since 1994 Centrals have lost the most GF's now :) Interesting fact.

That may happen if you actually get there.

Interesting stat Central have lost more GF in that period than Glenelg have made!

Central have won more premierships in that period than Glenelg in their history!

so, it's not just US that's ruining the competition.

And am I right in saying that up until Eagles played Centrals in the 2000 Grand FInal there hadn't been a SANFL Grand Final that didn't feature one of Port, Norwood, North or Sturt (as most historians agree - the true Big 4 of the 20th century).

I guess that you can come up with all sorts of bizarre stats like that.
