TV Channels coverage of the SANFL

Postby spell_check » Sat Aug 27, 2011 6:57 pm

While the VFL had Channel 7 as it's broadcaster for many years - 1957-1986; then 1988 to the AFL awarding the TV rights to Channels 9, 10 and Foxtel for the 2002 season, the SANFL has had many changes in broadcaster.

I have wondered the exact timeline of the coverage, and perhaps the different shows that have been held about the SANFL, right through to Channel 31s shows in 2005-2006.

I know the following have televised matches:

Channel 9 1974-1975
Channel 7 1976-1979
Channel 9 1980
Channel 10 1988
Channel 9 1990-1992
Channel 2 1984-

Late 60s saw Channels 2,7 & 9 all have a game each and they would show their replays at the same time on Saturday Nights - this situation existed until the end of the 1971 season.
Channel 9 had exclusive rights for 72-74 where they would cover 2 matches - one would be shown in prime time with commentators Max Hall, Ian Aitken and Wally May and the 2nd match would be shown later that night after the Sat night movie and had commentators like Ron Kitchen, Gary Window and Noel Teasdale. 75 and 76 returned to the 3 stations arrangement before Ch 7 got exclusive rights in 77.

Thought I'd try and compile a list of some of the prominent commentators we've had over the years (pre 1990's)

Ian Aitken
Brian Cunningham
Ian Day
David Darcy
Kym Dillon
Denis Errey
Max Hall
Gerry Harrison
Daryl Hicks
Ron Kitchen
Peter Marker
Wally May
David Mckay
Robert Oatey
John Robinson
Noel Teasdale
Gary Window

Hosts:
Mark Aiston
David Basheer
Mike Coward
Ken Cunningham
Wally Foreman (I reckon he was on ABC for a year around 83/84)
Rick Keegan
Bruce McAvaney
Sandy Roberts

Cameos over the years from identities such as Peter Carey and Bob Hammond and a host of others.

All the stations coverages look correct, I'm not old enough to go beyond the 70s.

Yeah, I was going to list him, but I couldn't remember his surname, whether it was McCabe, McKay or whatever, but now I recall it was McCann.

Mad Woodpecker fan Scott McBain? Think he might have presented certain footy shows, rather than doing actual commentary.

For a while there ABC telecast what seemed to be the 3rd match in line after the commercial channel got:

1 - game at Football Park
2 - their pick for the next best game

I think the ABC may also have shown highlights of the Footy Park game.

The posts suggest this was 84-87ish but I thought it was happenning regularly earlier in the 80s.

Rick Keegan actually did match commentary too.

Lindsay Head did match reviews on KG's Football Inquest with possibly the worst enunciation in television history, a fair effort considering he was on the sme show as KG.

Yeah I listed Keegan and a few others as "hosts" to differentiate them from the commentators who were ex players and their opinion was more "expert" based.

I once heard Stuart Palmer on radio doing commentary, he would be the worst I've ever heard for clarify, he seemed to be all over the shop. When was KG's Football Inquest, was that in the 70's, presumably was a pre-cursor to KG's Footy Show.

Also don't forget the Reserves telecasts. In what years were they on? I know they were on Channel 7 in the mid 1980s.

KG's Footy Show also made a brief comeback in 1995 or 1996 I think.

Another question - when did the Maney/Cross/Soders combination start on the ABC coverage, and are they (or at least Maney and Cross) the longest running pair of regular co-commentators for the one channel?
