Fading memories of a great game

Seeing as scoundrels regularly put alcohol in my drink (and other dangerous additives inbibed over the years), my memory is generally fading faster than Alanis Morrisette. I have (fading) memories of what I believe in my view as the greatest game of SANFL footy I have ever witnessed.

The match was between Glenelg and West Adelaide, round three I think it was in 1983. Of course West Adelaide won the flag that year with a team regarded as one of the best in SANFL history and Glenelg were on their way to somehow (considering some of the talent they had back then) missing the finals after 'Campbell's Charges' got off to a 0-7 start.

Glenelg kicked about 23 goals but went down to Westies who managed 28 or something like that. The game was at the park I think and the ball was wizzing from one end of the ground to the other. Sensational stuff that would put today's tinpot dynasty well and truly in the shade.

DVD that Mr Dissident!

REB

Haha!

As much as i'd love to be able to DVD that, I'd struggle to find it in the first place! I don't even know what sort of library the SANFL has on things that far back (full games anyway) but it would be worth it's weight in gold!

Does anyone know if the SANFL keeps a library of past games? Or would it be the channel that covered it that would have past games? If I could have the 80s again I would tape a whole lot of games from tv. The only ones I have are grand finals unfortunately.

Whatever the TV stations have, we are forced to watch VFL from that era, I'm afraid.

Round 3 1983
West 5.5 16.7 21.10 29.13 (187)
Glenelg 6.4 12.5 17.7 23.11 (149)

I had believed that a lot of old footage had been conveniently "lost" by the telly stations.

Crying shame if it has.

All SANFL footage should be made Public Domain.

****, I would spend my own time putting it all on DVD for people. Imagine the library we could create.

Don't call it a library Diss. You will scare away the Port and Centrals fans.

I happened to find the Advertiser report of that game.

It says that it was the highest scoring game at Football Park up to that date.

Best players were:

West: Lindner, Bennett, Grosser, R Winter, Fielke, Burgess, Smith, Borchard

Glenelg: Kernahan, McGuinness, Marshall, Duthy, Symonds, Maynard

West coach Neil Kerley was quoted as saying "This is the best team I've had for 8 years". Which proved to be correct as they went on to win the Grand Final that year!

Translation: "this is the best team since I was coaching Glenelg" 8)

Not surprising really, since he only had the Eagles in between...
:P
