1976 Woodville first win against Port

Postby bays2011 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:28 pm

I believe this clip is from Woodville's first win over Port. Includes Buff Tyrell breaking his collar bone in a collision. I am told that he did not leave the ground as Woodville had used their two reserves so he stood in the goal square for the rest of the match. From there he kicks the winning goal, which is included in the clip. Spelly, can you confirm round number and scores?

It was Round 7 1976, played on May 15.

Woodville 12-13 (85), d. Port Adelaide 11-12 (78)
Goals
W: Mulvihill 3 Sewer 3 Ford 2 L.Twelftree Hutton Maylin Tyrell
PA: D.Cahill 3 Gerlach 2 Cunningham 2 Jackman 2 Porplycia C.Natt

Woodville led 6-5 to 0-2 at 1/4 time but Port caught up to trail by only 1 goal at half time. Woodville hung on to lead by 14 at 3/4 time, then eventually held on in an exciting finish.

The Tyrell goal didn't win the game for Woodville, it gave them a lead of more than a goal late in the final term.

Thanks for posting all these videos on here bays2011, they are sensational :D

A couple of quick questions, for anyone who may know...how many games did Woodville win in total in '76, and also what position did they finish on the ladder?

Also, I think its been mentioned before, but Woodville has had some great players over the years who have then left them to go to other clubs, Twelftree, Sewer and Stemper being 3 examples here.

I noticed a Graham Linke, is that the same player who was at South in the early 1980's (I have a feeling the South player's first name was Graham although not 100% certain).

Woodville won 6 games in 1976 and finished 9th. West Torrens finished last with 2 wins.

Geoff Linke played at South., and he tried his luck at St.Kilda in 1982. Graham Linke was recruited to Woodville from Geelong, and he returned to the VFL to play for Footscray in 1977.

Great clip, thank you. Good, intelligent commentary too. Still talk about this game. Graeme Linke was a remarkable player, we never had a recruit like him, BOG till half time this day, and he was standing Ebert, but the injury he received (knee I think) ruined his season from memory. Raw emotion from the Woodville people, many hopped the fence to celebrate and Mike Coward reported that 'the scenes after the match resembled those of a premier club's'. As ever the quality of the football in many of these clips is outstanding.

Ahhhhhh, memories. "I was there"

The footage reminded me exactly why I had Graham Linke at FB in my Woodville TOTC. :D

Also forgot how talented Russell Hutton could be.

It's funny/painful watching Tyrell's teammates jump all over his busted shoulder after he kicks the goal. He seems to crumple at the knees a bit to try to protect himself.

When did the Woodville guernsey change to green numbers on a gold back?

That's the first time I have seen that style guernsey in a clip but I recall seeing it in photos.

1977.

1964-67 was the gold with the green V and the green numbers.
1968-74 was the stripes with the WFC badge and the yellow numbers on the green patch.
1975-76 was the white numbers on the green patch with the fatter stripes, still with the WFC badge.
1977-82 was the fatter stripes with the green numbers on the plain gold back, now with the SANFL Peckers badge.
1983-90 was the Warrior guernsey - a throwback to the original.

Love it!

Eight years-old when Woodville started wearing this guernsey. The space/future/superhero theme was a winner for us kids. Especially the logo that had the Warrior with one arm-out, fist clenched, flying like Superman, footy tucked under the other arm.

Rowe & Jarman were selling a bunch of Woodville guernseys at discount prices late-90/early-91. But only in kids sizes, unfortunately. Otherwise I would've snapped one up.

More than one, actually...
