when was it outlawed ? & i believe mick clingly (west torrens) was the last player to kick a place kick



for those that are unsure what a place kick is, it is when you see a rugby player (league or union) line up for the 'conversion kick' (ie kicking it off the ground)

I wasn't aware it had been outlawed, I just assumed the kick took too much time to effect so just disappeared from the game.

I will equally stand corrected, but I don't believe its been outlawed from the game either - no more than the drop kick, they just simply disappeared from the game over time. Many fans I know who grew up through the 50's and 60's have long said that the loss of the drop kick is one of the more disappointing aspects of modern football, due to its sheer accuracy.

When I coached junior colts in the country, one of my players used to use the drop kick nearly all the time in game play and I encouraged it strongly. Amazing how many parents were horrified to see it.

I used the drop kick when I was playing goalie for a lower grade Soccer team in about 1960.
It gave me more distance and accuracy, and it startled the European and English kids at first.

Surprised! watch any 1950's soccer footage and photos and the keepers were using drop kicks even back then in world cups, fa cups etc etc.

I'd had nothing to do with Soccer before I was co-opted as the sole Aussie in the team, so I'd never seen any film of it.
None of the lot I played with seemed to have either - mind you they were mainly Poms, and Greeks..

i have got those distances from a Sporting Globe Publication

Have read elsewhere this comment :
Despite folklore Mcnamara did not kick the ball 100 yards but went mighty close
Mcnamara played for SK then ES and then came back to SK

I did a search and found this :
89.2 in Sydney in 1914
93.O a world record in 1923

Whichever we believe varies
But to dob a place kick in his world record kick of 93.0 yards is massive
93.0 is about 85 metres

according to my mate (an sanfl umpire) who checked, the place kick is now illegal in footy
